US importers want Africa to succeed as a footwear, clothing source

Published: 16th Feb 2018
US importers see Africa as an important upcoming source of footwear and clothing. Mark Bennett, a consultant most recently to the Lesotho Government, has been watching presentations by US trade organisations, and the SA Department of Trade & Industry (DTI), to the US International Trade Commission (USITC), which has been requested by the US Trade Representative (USTR) to prepare a report on U.S. Trade and Investment with Sub-Saharan Africa: Recent Developments.

"Public hearings were held in late January in DC," he wrote. "This is high stakes stuff - especially for the SA auto industry - which did not make an input!

"Various US lobbies did - wheat, pork, poultry.  Effectively they are wanting greater market access to the SA economy.  Something Trump is bound to support.  Net effect - no more one way trade preferences via AGOA; but a bilateral FTA.

"See the SA government input.  Look at it; as did the Footwear Distributors & Retailers of America and the American Apparel & Footwear Association.
