Stellenbosch, W. Cape, SA - Financed by its social impact programme, Stellenbosch University is investigating a fish skin tanning project to assist jobless people in nearby coastal communities.
The project is headed by Dr Khalid Salie, who explained: "We are targeting community members in Genadendal, Strand and Saldanha, utilising fish skins from our processing facilities in the area. It will be mainly tilapia skins, but also investigating possible application with rainbow trout and other candidate marine species."
To develop appropriate technology, the university has organised a workshop to run from 06 to 18 February.
The main presenter will be Patricia Oliveira Kanarski of fish skin tannery Texturas da Amazonia, based in Ji-Paraná, Rondônia, Brazil.
Rolfes Leather has been invited to take part in the workshop. "Patricia has close ties with MK Quimica, which is Rolfes' principal in Brazil," said Rolfes Leather MD Quintin Marais.
Further information is expected for the next issue.
