Inclusivity tested: Major retailer faces backlash, removes LGBTQ merchandise
USA Newspapers were abuzz on May 23, 2023, when reports surfaced that Target, a prominent retailer, promptly removed certain LGBTQ merchandise from its stores due to significant customer backlash. Target had previously introduced its Pride Collection, an initiative aimed at celebrating inclusivity. However, confrontations between customers and employees, as well as instances of discarded Pride merchandise, compelled Target to prioritize employee safety. Consequently, the controversial items were swiftly eliminated from all physical stores and online platforms across the United States.
What occurred at Target bears a striking resemblance to the experience of the beer company Bud Light. Bud Light encountered public outrage after featuring transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney in an Instagram commercial on April 1, 2023. As a result of the backlash, Bud Light's sales plummeted and their shares declined.
These incidents ignite discussions about the delicate balance that companies must strike between inclusivity and addressing customer concerns.
