Bader, Karan hide agreement continues
Bader SA and Karan Beef have confirmed that the agreement whereby Bader SA buys all Karan Beef hides is still in place.
Karan, which is a vertically integrated feedlot, abattoir and meat wholesaling business, slaughters around 2 000 cattle per day. The hides are third party wet blue tanned.
Bader SA COO Robert O’Connell said the Karan hides were “not sufficient to meet Bader SA’s needs”.
He declined to comment on what percentage of Bader’s international hide requirements the Karan hides make up.
Karan director David Sonnenberg said Karan was not affected by foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), which is an ongoing problem in parts of SA. “We have strict quarantine protocols to prevent animal diseases including FMD,” he said.
Karan acquired a competitor, KZN-based Triple A Beef, including a feedlot and abattoir at Albert Falls, outside Pietermaritzburg, effective from 1 May last year.
