Skechers-Shein partnership: Dilution or strategic expansion?

Unlikely to appear on Shein is this $140 Skechers sneaker, as it doesn’t match the budget-friendly focus of Shein shoppers. Instead, more affordable Skechers shoes will likely be featured. Image: Skechers
Since 2023, Skechers’ decision to sell on Shein has raised eyebrows. Known for its comfortable, casual, and sometimes athletic shoes, Skechers occupies a market space perceived to offer higher quality compared to Shein’s fast-fashion, low-price model. This move has some analysts worried about a potential dilution of Skechers’ brand image.
A Potential Brand Image Downgrade?
Skechers’ reputation for balancing affordability with quality may be compromised by selling alongside Shein’s lower-priced items. Customers who are loyal to the Skechers brand may hesitate to purchase from Shein, fearing a drop in standards. Furthermore, Skechers risks cannibalizing its own sales, as customers may opt for the cheaper option on Shein instead of purchasing from Skechers’ own channels.
Targeting the Female Market?
However, there’s a counterargument to consider. Shein boasts a significantly larger female customer base compared to Skechers’ broader demographic. This move by Skechers could be a strategic attempt to gain a foothold in the female footwear market. By partnering with Shein, Skechers could potentially tap into a vast pool of female shoppers who might not have previously considered their brand.

The Pursuit of Fast Fashion?
Another possibility is that Skechers is adapting its brand image to cater to the fast-fashion crowd. Perhaps they’re developing trendy, fast-fashion footwear lines alongside their core products. If this is the case, then Shein, known for its trend-driven approach to clothing, becomes an ideal partner. Skechers could leverage Shein’s platform to reach a new audience interested in both trendy apparel and footwear.
About Shein and Skechers
Shein: Founded in 2008, Shein is a global online retailer specializing in fast fashion clothing, accessories, and now, some third-party brands. They’re known for their trendy, budget-friendly items and cater mainly to Gen Z and Millennial demographics.
Skechers: Established in 1992, Skechers offers a range of casual, athletic footwear. Their target audience is broader, encompassing Gen Z, Millennials, and some older demographics seeking comfort and style.
The Verdict: Time Will Tell
Skechers’ decision to sell on Shein is a bold move with both potential benefits and risks. Whether it dilutes their brand image or opens doors to new markets remains to be seen. The success of this strategy will likely depend on how effectively Skechers manages their brand perception and product offerings within the Shein ecosystem. Only time will tell if this is a misstep or a clever way to capture new customers.
