Johannesburg, Gauteng, SA – One would expect vulcanised canvas to be showing renewed momentum, given its durability and long-lasting value in a market where affordability is key. There’s also a strong heritage connection, with many South Africans remembering vulcanised footwear — like Converse, back when it was widely accessible at affordable prices.

At present, however, injection-moulded footwear is clearly leading the market. It allows for more complex designs in both uppers and outsoles, something that was not possible before, and it comes in at a lower price point. With consumers always looking for a fashion element at the right price, injection footwear continues to gain appeal.

That said, we are seeing younger consumers beginning to rediscover vulcanised footwear as a stylish and authentic choice. I believe demand will return to the broader market, but it may take a few more years before we see it at scale.
