Management changes at NFLC

Vanderbijlpark (SA) – There have been 2 management changes at the National Footwear & Leather Cluster (NFLC).
In December, Eddels CEO John Comley was elected interim board chairman.
In January, Ernest Heunis, chairman of the Skin, Hide & Leather Council (SHALC), was appointed acting executive director of the NFLC. This is a new position.

 

Adwear George closes

George (SA) – PPE, workwear and uniform distributor Adwear George closed at the end of January, proprietor Helen Fitzmaurice said. She gave no reasons.

 

 

Arena Trims moves

Pinetown (SA) – Upper and insole manufacturer Arena Trims has moved to new premises at 12 Sugarbush Crescent, Mahogany Ridge, off Stockville Road in Westmead. The phone numbers remain unchanged.
Sales & marketing manager Joelene Chetty said the new premises were not only bigger, but were on 1 level and in 1 building.
Previously, Arena occupied 5 adjacent mini-factories, some with mezzanine floors.

 

Registrations open for CLE’s India Leather & Footwear Expo in Cape Town next month

Cape Town (SA) – India, being touted as a successor to China as a global footwear and leather goods supplier, will hold a Footwear, Leather Goods/Accessories, Leather Garments and Finished Leather Trade Expo on March 8 and 9 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.
India’s Council for Leather Exports (CLE), functioning under the aegis of India’s Ministry of Commerce & Industry, will bring 30 leading leather and non-leather footwear, leather garments, leather goods manufacturers. Products will include fashion footwear, safety footwear, belts, wallets, gloves, travel bags, portfolios, safety gloves, and finished leather.
“These reputable manufacturers are all members of the Council for Leather Exports (CLE) India, who will also be present at the show to provide invaluable assistance and information to South African businesses regarding sourcing from India,” organiser Deidre Harte said.
“There’s something of interest here for anyone involved in the industry – chains to independents, importers and distributors to commission agents.”

ISPO: Full House

MUnich (Germany) – More than 80 000 visitors – 87% foreign – from 120 countries came to ISPO Munich, the world’s largest sports business exhibition, held from January 24 to 27, organisers said. Visitor numbers increased from Italy, Switzerland and Austria, with a large number of visitors from Russia and Ukraine. The number of exhibitors also increased, from 2 585 to 2 645.
The entire 180 000 m² of exhibition space, covering 16 exhibition halls, was fully booked.
Klaus Dittrich, CEO and chairman of Messe München, said: “Following the challenging pre-Christmas sales conditions the mood was definitely better than expected. The plethora of innovations and new products presented at ISPO Munich further strengthened the confidence of the industry to be able to weather the latest challenges presented by climate and market structure changes.”

 

ABSA Agri Trends 22/01: Hides & skins prices

The average hide price traded slightly higher over the past week at R13,79/kg green due to currency fluctuations. Hide prices are determined by the average of RMAA and independent companies. The average price for Dorper skins traded lower at R82.50/skin and Merino also traded lower at R79.79/skin.

Durban (SA) – Rudolph ‘Rudi’ Geyser, former MD of EVA Industries, died yesterday of complications following surgery. He was 78. An obituary will follow in the next issue of S&V Footwear and Leather Goods.
