RV Footwear to supply Pick ‘n Pay

Port Elizabeth (SA) – RV Footwear, which until recently focused on supplying uppers to other Port Elizabeth factories, is to meet with Pick ‘n Pay buyers this week to finalise details of a contract to supply the supermarket chain with footwear. This follows it being selected after taking part in Pick ‘n Pay’s Boost Your Biz competition to encourage potential suppliers from among small businesses. SAFLIA stats show growth for local production, slight drop for imports

Umhlanga (SA) – Local footwear production climbed 1.5% in 2015, from 59.9 million pairs in 2014 to 60.8 million pairs, according to the SAFLIA Digest, released last week.
Imports dropped 0.1% from 196.3 to 196.1 million pairs between 2014 and 2015.
The value increased for both. Local production climbed 8.9% from R4.4 to R4.8 billion. Imports rose 16.4% from R9.8 to R11.4 billion.
Exports dropped from 3.9 to 3.5 million pairs, but rose in value from R367 million to R393 million.

Arena to launch PU comfort footbeds

Pinetown (SA) – Arena Trims has installed a PU injection moulding machine which will allow it to compete in the retail footbed market, according to sales & marketing manager Joelene Chetty. She said the company would offer the product to other brands, but also planned to launch its own retail brand.
The 20-station machine is being commissioned and will be in production within weeks.

Keate’s Drift plant re-opens as clothing factory

Tugela Ferry (SA) – A clothing factory – which intends in time to also make school shoes – is to officially open on Wednesday in the premises of the former Bata Keate’s Drift factory near Greytown.
Director Lelly Mntungwa said Madlelaphansi Clothing Factory would make school uniforms and linen, and wanted to make school shoes.
“20 years ago, the Bata shoe factory that once employed 3000 people closed down, leading to a high unemployment rate and joblessness at Msinga,” she wrote.

IDC presentation on exports to Zimbabwe

Durban (SA) – SAFLEC and SAFLIA are to co-host an educational seminar presented by the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), in conjunction with Bureau Veritas, on PIPs and exports to Zimbabwe. It will be held on August 16 at the Coastlands Hotel on Ridge Road, Musgrave.

The average hide price over the pastweek was R15.25/kg green. Hide prices are determined by the average of RMAA and independent companies. The average price for Dorper skins was R55.42/skin and Merino was R94.23/skin.
