Megashoes to close.

Durban (SA) – Importer Megashoes cc is to close. Member Yusuf Bham said he expected the business to be wound up by the end of the year.
He gave no reason for the decision except that he planned to retire. “I’m 65, and I’ve been in the business 43 years. It’s too long.”

 

SABS testing: Next meeting on August 17

Pretoria (SA) – The next meeting – the third – between the SA Bureau of Standards and a working group of its footwear customers over its testing policies, will be held on August 17, working group chairman Ernest Heunis said today.
He said one of the points to be discussed will be the bureau’s charges.
A component manufacturer, responding to our report on the last meeting, said: “In 2014 we paid a little over R15 000 for partial testing on 8 samples. Last year we were quoted R95 000 to do complete tests on 8 samples.”

 

Two Tone buys Simply Shoes stock

Pietermaritzburg (SA) – Two Tone Agencies has acquired the stock of liquidated mini-chain Simply Shoes for under R1.5 million, Seone Maskell of auctioneer Peter Maskell Auctioneers has confirmed. The retailer closed at the end of March.
She said the first purchaser had been Walk Tall, but that had been substituted by Two Tone Agencies.
The offer to purchase the stock from the 11 shops had been for R1 046 000, including VAT. She said a large part of the stock had been covered by retention of ownership by suppliers.

 

Brand Folio plans R30m marketing re-launch for Skechers

Johannesburg (SA) – New Skechers distributors Brand Folio LLC is re-launching the brand with a “R30 million marketing commitment”, according to a release.
It says the campaign will include TV ads, billboards and magazines from this month.
“Marketing is geared to attract every man, woman and child with Skechers’ huge range of cutting edge performance and lifestyle footwear. Skechers re-launches with building wraps and billboards in Johannesburg and Cape Town this month, with Durban, Port Elizabeth and Bloemfontein to follow.”
It says Skechers is now the 2nd largest footwear brand in the USA.

 

MCN sells out to principal

Cape Town (SA) – Sporting goods products distributor MCN Solutions cc has been taken over by its US-based principal, Implus. In an announcement on June 22, Inplus said it had bought MCN’s assets, and that MCN members Marc Smith and Rebecca Laird will remain in management roles with the newly formed Implus Africa.

 

SAFLIA AGM

Durban (SA) – SAFLIA’s AGM will be held at Makaranga Garden Lodge in Kloof on September 1. The closed session starts at 15.00, the dinner is 18.30 for 19.00.

The average hide price over the pastweek was R15.30/kg green. Hide prices are determined by the average of RMAA and independent companies. The average price for Dorper skins was R50.42/skin and Merino was R92.98/skin.
