Treasury revising footwear tender specs

Pretoria (SA) – The National Treasury is revising the categories of footwear available to government departments as part of the national footwear tender, with a view reducing the number of styles and encouraging more departments to participate in the tender.
In a reply from ‘the office of the Chief Procurement Officer’, the Treasury said publication of this year’s national footwear tender, RT59 2016, had been delayed “to verify administrative compliance of all bidders”, which may have meant asking why prices had risen more than in previous years.
It added footwear items on contract were being restructured to simplify them, “with the aim of achieving bigger pairages of a smaller number of styles and encouraging more Departments to participate in the contract”.
Referring to the participation in this year’s contract by Midvaal Municipality, it said: “Municipalities are another layer of government, so their participation to Transversal Contracts is encouraged.  It is not the start of handling tenders for municipalities, all spheres of government have previously submitted requests to participate in contracts awarded through competitive process.  Where the contract is still valid, permission is granted to participate.”

SAFLIA board members elected

Durban (SA) – Jordan & Co CEO and outgoing SAFLIA chairman Noel Whitehead, Willowton Footwear member Mahomed Mahomed, Watson Shoes COO Francois Strydom, and Eddels Shoes CEO John Comley (co-opted) were re-elected to the SAFLIA board at the AGM on September 1st. They will serve a 4-year term.
Little Slipper Company COO Jacky Hay was elected to the board following the resignation of long-serving board member and former chairman Sanjay Pattundeen, MD of Caprini Footwear.
The election of the incoming chairman and possible other changes to the board will take place at the next management committee (Mancom) meeting in November. The date is still to be decided.

Private game ranches ‘much bigger’ than national parks

Pretoria (SA) – Private game ranches cover more than 3 times as much land as South Africa’s national parks, and hold double the number of large mammals, according to a release by Wildlife Ranching SA yesterday.
WRSA president Wiaan van der Linde said approximately 10 000 privately-owned game ranches covered about 20 million hectares – “most of which is marginal land, unsuited to traditional agricultural purposes” – and carried “around 12 million head of game”, including 30% of the country’s white rhinos and 23% of its black rhinos.
He said South Africa’s national parks are home to 6 million head of game in a total area of only 6 million hectares.
The full report will be in S&V African Leather shortly.
