Counterfeit case remanded

Durban (SA) – The owner of the factory at 86 Leicester Road, Mobeni, raided on October 19 for producing counterfeit Nike and Guess products, appeared in the Durban Specialised Commercial Court on January 19, Hawks spokesman Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo said on Friday. He said the matter had been remanded for further investigation, and that “We are awaiting the remand date from the prosecutor”.

 

New name for NFLC replacement

Pretoria (SA) – The scrapped National Footwear & Leather Cluster is to be replaced by a body to be known as the Footwear & Leather Industrial Council, according to Ernest Heunis, acting executive manager of the NFLC. He said the application for registration of the new body was with the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), and he hoped it would be finalised by month-end.

 

NEDLAC meetings start again

Durban (SA) – NEDLAC’s fortnightly meetings begin again on February 1, according to SAFLIA executive director Jirka Vymetal, who represents the footwear industry.
        The meetings alternate between ‘non-agricultural market access’ (NAMA) issues and ‘the technical sectoral liaison committee’ (Teselico).

 

 

CLE India Leather & Footwear trade expo: Airfares on offer

Cape Town (SA) – The Council for Leather Exports (CLE) India will again host its annual trade expo on March 8 and 9 in Cape Town, and it is offering a complimentary economy class return airfare to out-of-town buyers, subject to approval. A limited number of buyers can be considered under the programme, so if you are interested, contact show organiser LTE for the criteria.
        India is the second largest producer of footwear, leather garments and goods in the world and 45 top class manufacturers will be showcasing trends reflecting the modern retailing environment of India. These manufacturers are all members of the Council for Leather Exports (CLE) India who will also be present to provide assistance and information to South African businesses regarding sourcing from India. This year, a wider range of products will be on display including ladies, men’s and children’s leather and non-leather footwear and sandals; leather jackets; small leather goods such as handbags, wallets, gloves, belts, travel bags; safety shoes and boots; finished leather - buffalo, cow, sheep and goat; saddlery items as well as shoe components – welt and veneer heel covers, soles, shoe lasts, shoe uppers, etc. The event will connect leading manufacturers from India with Southern African chain store buyers, independent retailers, importers, manufacturers, agents, distributors and other important industry decision makers.

ABSA Agri Trends 19/01: Hides & skins prices

The average bovine hide price over the past week was R15.34/kg green. Hide prices are determined by the average of RMAA and independent companies.
        The average price for Dorper skins was R45.56/skin and Merino was R81.38/skin.
