Brits re-opens finishing plant

Brits (SA) – The Brits Leather Group has re-opened its finishing plant to supply the automotive aftermarket and the footwear industry, group CEO Willem Ebersohn said today.
Its former finishing plant, which traded as Zibane Leather, closed last year. The new plant will trade under a new, as yet undecided name.
Jaco van Eeden, who was with Nakara Leather Tanning in Namibia, is the manager.

Edcon ‘considering not renewing leases’

Johannesburg (SA) – Edcon is considering not renewing some of its leases as they lapse, according to a report on eNCA.com on Monday.
It quoted Edcon CEO Bernie Brooks as saying that the domestic market was being affected by retail cannibalisation, whereby the opening of new stores drew customers away from existing outlets.

Green Cross retrenchment

Cape Town (SA) – Green Cross Manufacturers head of merchandising & sourcing finished product Gavin Wade was retrenched earlier this month, the latest of series of retrenchments going back over a year.
Green Cross responded to a request for comment with a statement from Sandy Moir, PA to MD Tracey Chiappini-Young: “As with all businesses it is necessary for Green Cross to review its operations from a cost, efficiency and structural point of view on an ongoing basis, and to make decisions in the best interests of all stakeholders and the sustainability of the business.
“The past year has been no exception and whilst I can confirm that some employees were retrenched as a result of this process, it is not Green Cross policy to disclose these numbers or the personal details of the employees who were retrenched.”
SA-born Wade, who was recruited from the UK by former Green Cross MD Greg Smith, said it seemed likely he would return to the UK, but that he was keeping his options open. He can be reached on +27 (0)76 021 4684.
