Steinhoff lists retail division

Cape Town (SA) – Steinhoff African Retail Limited (STAR), which includes Pep, Ackermans, Dunn's, John Craig, Shoe City and Tekkie Town among its retail chains, has listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. Parent company Steinhoff International sold 23.19% of the shares for R16 billion.

NR Footwear sold

Pietermaritzburg (SA) – In a deal of several parts, NR Footwear has been sold by Christine and Allan Norman.
The infants' brand, Cobbles, which NR was making with permission from Corrida Shoes, will now be made by Corvari Footwear. Corvari has also acquired NR's own infants' brand, Noodles.
The NR factory, and its mostly women's footwear hawker trade, has been acquired by Berrick Salmond, who also has Dr Rae Shoes in Hillcrest. He said some of Dr Rae's production, which includes women's leather comfort footwear and horse riding boots, would be sold through the NR factory shop which adjoins the factory in Failsworth Road.
Christine Norman said they would be emigrating back to the UK. - [dr.raeshoes@global.co.za]

Bird flu - ostrich industry holding thumbs

Oudtshoorn (SA) – The ostrich industry is hoping that the latest outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (AI) will be short-lived.
The outbreak of the H5N8 strain of the disease in late June, initially in poultry farms in Mpumalanga, later affected 7 ostrich farms in the Heidelberg area and 5 between Calitzdorp and Oudtshoorn in the Karoo.
SA Ostrich Business Chamber CEO Piet Kleyn said follow-up tests on 5 of the Heidelberg farms had so far come back, all negative. Results from all the other farms are still awaited.
"The industry's bio-security measures have ensured that the disease has not spread from farm to farm," he said, "and there have been no serious mortalities on account of it. The decision not to stamp out the flocks appears to have been the correct one."
Exports of raw ostrich meat have been suspended but heat treated meat export continues from unaffected farms.

Movements

Chris and Tony Stottelaar...Looking to the future.

Port Elizabeth (SA) – Chris Stottelaar, son of Leather Systems founder Tony Stottelaar, has joined the business.
"This places Leather Systems as a vibrant and modern provider to the industry for many years to come," Stottelaar Snr wrote. "Through our principals, we are suppliers into the leather industry of high-quality and modern machinery, advanced chemical products as well as spare parts for all types, and brands, of tannery machines. To continue to supply the industry with our services we view the future as being a critical dimension." - [+27 (0)41 487 0847, chris@leathersystems.co.za]

They Said It

"I just wish the Springboks would sort themselves out. That would definitely help us." - Sneakers International CEO Dave Moss. Replica gear is a major part of sales at the group's 14 stores. On the plus side (for the Springbok team, not Sneakers), he said sales of All Blacks replica gear, once very strong in the Western and Eastern Cape provinces, had fallen off in recent years.
