Competition Commission gives go-ahead for takeover of Holdsport

Johannesburg (SA) – The Competition Commission on Wednesday approved the proposed transaction, without conditions, whereby Long4Life intends to acquire Holdsport, which owns the Sportsman's Warehouse and Outdoor Warehouse chains.
In a release, the commission said:
"Long4Life is an investment holding company that is listed on the JSE and was incorporated to invest primarily in businesses with attractive growth prospects, led by strong entrepreneurial minded management terms. Long4lifes’s primary focus will be on acquiring equity interest in businesses which fall within the broader lifestyle category of consumer facing enterprises. Long4life aims to provide financial, strategic and management support to its investee companies.
"Holdsport operates as a retailer of sport apparel, footwear and equipment in South Africa (and though one store in Namibia) through the well-known Sportman’s Warehouse stores situated around the country, a retailer of outdoor and camping apparel, footwear and equipment in South Africa (and though one store in Namibia) though the well-known Outdoor Warehouse stores situated around the country and a wholesaler of sport, outdoor and lifestyle apparel through its subsidiaries.
"The Commission is of the view that the proposed transaction is unlikely to substantially prevent or lessen competition in any market. In addition, there are no public interest concerns."
The group has a total footprint of 63 stores.
The deal is the second for Brian Joffe’s investment holding company, which was formed to invest in lifestyle businesses and was listed in April.

SARS-footwear meeting over reference pricing

Cape Town (SA) – A follow-up meeting between SARS and the footwear industry - SAFLIA and both unions - will take place on November 7.
This will be a separate meeting from the CTFL Industry Forum, a body chaired by SARS and intended to discuss issues around CTFL imports. SAFLIA director Jirka Vymetal said it was hoped that a separate, footwear-specific forum would be formed "because the current format seems to be a challenge".
One of the principal issues to be discussed will be 'reference pricing' - compiling a list of realistic prices for various categories of imported footwear to enable Customs officials to judge whether imports are under-invoiced. Safety footwear imports will be the starting point.

Appointment

Durban (SA) – Jonathan Colloty (pictured) was appointed a director of Michelle Footwear (Pty) Ltd, trading as Froggie, on October 13.
He joined Michelle in November 2012 as a financial and management accountant. His responsibilities "cover a very broad array of functions" in the company aside from finance.
