Lyndsay Phillips SA closes

Durban (SA) – Sole Management (Pty) Ltd, distributor of US women's footwear brand Lindsay Phillips, closed at the end of October.
       Director Gert Boshoff said he and his wife, Jessica, "hadn't done enough homework" before launching in SA.
       They had been forced to buy stock from the US parent company because they could not meet minimum orders from Chinese factories. "That was an expensive way of operating, and on top of that, the parent company insisted we retail the brand at international prices."
       Aside from wholesale, Sole Management had a shop in Durban's uShaka Village Walk "which wasn't the right location for us".
       Sole Management has around 5 000 pairs to dispose of. Lindsay Phillips' key design element is interchangeable straps and trims. - +27 (0)74 975 8997, gert.boshoff@solemanagement.co.za

They Said It

"There's a young man with me - I better ring off before he eats all the biscuits." - East London retailer Stephen Wilken of Behr's talking about Dangee Carken director Jason Craft.

"We closed the factory.... no point fighting in a losing battle. With a young family, it made sense to give them a chance at a future! Perhaps we may set up a bespoke leather business here. There is a real premium on leather goods. Not sure if it makes sense to just trade or go the whole hog and set up a workshop. It will come - just one day at a time. Still follow your news for the leather sector though - great job!" - Lourenco and Orian Mendes, previously of Shuler Enterprises in Zimbabwe, who have subsequently moved to the UK.

A GREAT OPPORTUNITY

I am seeking to obtain a position in the footwear industry which I have enjoyed working in since 1972.
- I have worked in sales as an agent (Rockshoes / Paradise Wholesalers);
- As a chain footwear buyer and later merchandise director (for The Hub, Stuttafords and Footgear), and later as senior footwear buyer for Game / Massmart;
- As a manufacturer (I started Tuppino Footwear in 1992);
- As an independent retailer (I had 4 stores at one point).
The Footwear Industry has and always will be of interest to me, be it sales or in a management capacity or as a buyer, and I believe I have boundless expertise and enthusiasm to offer a wide variety of businesses in the industry. Prepared to relocate if required. - Neil Tupper, Cell: 0827732221, Email : neilt@ushomi.co.za
