Labora in Nigerian JV

Durban (SA) – Labora Shoes has gone into partnership with a manufacturer in Nigeria to make basic footwear for Mr Price Apparel, which now has around 6 stores in that country. A source at Mr Price said the chain worked with local manufacturers in various African countries where it has stores, but that the partnership between Labora and the Nigerian investors was a first.

 

Chic liquidation

Cape Town (SA) – Pretoria-based attorney firm Vezi & De Beer Inc is bringing the application to have Chic Shoes (Pty) Ltd placed in liquidation.

 

FLIC still awaiting go ahead

Pretoria (SA) – The Footwear & Leather Industry Cluster (FLIC), intended as the replacement for the National Footwear & Leather Cluster, is not yet operational, according to acting GM Ernest Heunis. It is still awaiting a sign-off of support by the Department of Trade & Industry.

 

Industry icons die

Two famous people in the global footwear industry died recently.
       Sonja Bata, the widow of Thomas J Bata, died on February 20, aged 91.
       She was famous in her own right as the founder of the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto, Canada, which holds over 13 000 items.
       Lancelot Pease Clark, a member of the family which founded and still owns C&J Clark International, died on February 26 in the UK. He was also active in SA with the Soul of Africa project.
