SA asked to bid for 2022 UITIC conference

Porto (Portugal) – South Africa was asked to bid to host the biennial International Union of Shoe Industry Technicians (UITIC) congress in 2022, SAFLIA director Jirka Vymetal said at the close of the 20th edition here. He said the DTI's Director: Leather & Footwear, Jaywant Irkhede, who was also there, felt SA should do so.
11 South Africans, including representatives from 4 manufacturers, were there.
"It will take a massive logistical effort to organise," he said, explaining why they had decided not to consider the 2020 event. "The Portuguese footwear industry has shown that it is absolutely world class, and we want to be in a position to be at least as professional as they have been.
"Besides the logistics there is the huge cost, sponsors need to be found, and so on."
A report on the congress will follow in the next edition of S&V Footwear & Leather Goods at the end of the month.
