Retail last week

On Saturday, comment from 4 retailers
"Not very good, but maybe next week will be better. It's probably much the same as this time last year. January and February aren't good months for us - business picks up from March. I'm not complaining." - Besré Barnard, member, AP Groenewald Outfitters, Prieska, N Cape. Independent, family outfitter.

"Foot traffic has not been good this week. January was much better, and this time last year was very good." - Tommy Mphago, manager, 2A division of the Apsley Group, Hyde Park Corner, Johannesburg, Gauteng. 3 stores, imported luxury branded clothing, footwear and leather goods.

"Very slow, but similar to last year. We concentrate more on footwear than clothing because there's less fashion. If it doesn't sell this month, it will sell next month." - Muhammad Arbee, Arbee's Supermarket, Dullstroom, Mpumalanga. Independent, general dealer, casual men's and women's footwear and school shoes.

"Very quiet. Worse than last year, I think. January also wasn't very good." - GC Doolabh, director, Ashkin's Outfitters, Uitenhage, E Cape. Independent, men's outfitter.

Logan Govender is now the sole member in Mystical Ice. It makes mostly leather infants', women's and men's sandals and women's shoes.

Durban (SA) – Main sponsor SAFLIA, with co-sponsor SAFLEC, will present the third Arsutoria collection workshop and trend seminar, to be held in Durban from May 13-17 at a venue to be announced. It will cover 2020/2021 Spring/Summer with a brief overview of Autumn Winter trends.

They Said It

"I have read some comments by retailers regarding the slow trade for JANUARY  and sounding PESSIMISTIC. The month of FEBRUARY  does NOT look any rosier. The  WEEKEND was below average and today, the 4th, which is still the beginning of the month and at the time of writing is ABSOLUTELY quiet....This does not augur well. South Africans are UNEMPLOYED and the foreign workforce, PARTICULARLY the Zimbabweans and Mozambicans and partly Malawians are sending whatever they earn back home. Thanks to our very porous borders. A huge loss of FOREIGN currency. Monies  that should have been spent here is not. The EFF ranting and raving does not ease the situation either. Moronic utterances.  We have a REAL PROBLEM in this COUNTRY...Enter the CHINESE DRAGON...our  industries are choking. HOPE  SOMETHING POSITIVE WILL HAPPEN after the Elections." - Ahmed Sibda, City Fashions, Benoni, Gauteng.

"Just need to get my partner and our resident builder on the line." - Sew Solutions' member Rajesh Raghunandan, talking about fellow member Rabin Nagesar who is spending much of his time keeping an eye on the company's new premises, going up in Westmead, Pinetown, KZN.

ABSA Agri Trends 05/02: Hides & skins prices

Bovine: Compared to the previous week the hide price declined further and traded 10,4% lower w/w at R2.53/kg green. The hide market remain under pressure as exports are limited by SA’s lost FMD free status.  Consequently, unsold stock levels increase.  NB* Hide prices are determined by the average of the RMAA (Red Meat Abattoir Association) and independent companies.
