Retail last week

On Saturday, comment from 5 retailers
"So-so, slightly down on last year this time, but it's been fair. As a retailer you don't know what to expect, and there's a lot of scepticism. However, you have to be positive and you have to adapt to circumstances, which is what we're doing. Hope is a very important sentiment." - Ebrahim Mansoor, proprietor, Exclusive Fashions, Ixopo, KZN. Men's outfitter, 1 store.

"Bad, very bad. Business in Springs was hurt by the closure of mines a couple of years ago, and the CBD has been affected by new malls." - Sudhir Lalloo, proprietor, Bargain House, Springs, Gauteng. Women's shoe shop, 1 store.

"Slightly down on last year. Fair, not busy, busy. The year so far has been OK. I don't believe in being negative." - Shaheen Mohamed, director, Barkly West Trading Co., Barkly West, N Cape. Clothing store, mostly women's footwear, 1 store.

"Last week, up until Wednesday this week, was bad. On Thursday it picked up, Friday was very good, and today has been good. It's surprising after a poor February." - Sam Mayet, member, Barrenger's Clothing & Shoes, Lenasia, Gauteng. Men's outfitter, 1 store.

"Very quiet, quieter than last year. The year so far has been on the quiet side." - Dawood Bassa, proprietor, Bassa's Shoe Box, Tongaat, KZN. Family footwear, 1 store.

School uniforms: Competition Commission warns of 'stricter approach'

Pretoria, Gauteng, SA (February 26, 2019) – At a press conference to address issues surrounding "anti-competitive conduct in the school uniform sector" last Tuesday, the Competition Commission said "in a major development", it had confirmed agreements with a number of private schools whereby they would "improve competition in the market for the supply of school uniforms and reducing school uniform prices for parents".
However, it warned schools that were "still engaged in uncompetitive behaviour" that its approach would "definitely be more firm and stricter towards those in defiance".
       See the statement here.

State footwear tender out

Pretoria, Gauteng, SA – The National Treasury says that RT59/2019, the tender for footwear for State departments, is available on its website. The 2018 tender was scrapped.

Who makes skips? Second asking

We have had NO RESPONSE to our query about shoe skips. Can anyone tell me who makes or supplies skips, please?

They Said It

"When I was 22-year-old new salesman at British United Shoe Machinery in Pietermaritzburg, my Boss Man and Branch Manager was Ben Peters, and I recall a remark that he made to me whilst I was sitting behind my desk: 'YOU DON’T MAKE MONEY SITTING IN THE OFFICE'. That remark was the 'BASE' that I have used from that day up to today." - Garth Ribbink, member, A Greenaways (Natal), Durban, KZN.
