Retail last week

On Saturday, comment from 5 retailers
"Quiet. The whole year so far has been quiet, although we had a good year last year. With trading the way it is, it looks like we'll lose some of the few remaining local clothing manufacturers. It's not a rosy picture." - Bertie Liebenberg, member, Big & Tall Gents' Outfitters, Randburg, Gauteng, SA. Independent, 1 store specialising in large sizes.

"Quite quiet. We were affected by load shedding. The whole year has been quiet so far." - Miché McIntyre, sales, Bare Necessity, Cape Town, W Cape, SA. Independent, 1 store, women's clothing, footwear, leather goods and cosmetics.

"March has been a bit slower than January and February, and it feels like there's been a bit of belt tightening. However, I also think consumers are waiting for winter styles before they buy. We took part in the pop-up market at the Decorex fair over the weekend, and that was good for us. I'm very positive about the months ahead." - Graeme Tuck, director, Blueberry Blush, Durban, KZN. Independent, 1 store and online, and wholesaler of footwear under its own brand.

"The year so far has been average, OK, but last week was the worst week of the year so far. Quite down." - Muhammad Boda, director, Boda Bros, Florida, Gauteng. Independent, 1 store, men's outfitter.

"Extremely slow. No traction whatsoever." - Muhammad Laher, manager, Bombay's of Nigel/Sports Fusion, Nigel, Gauteng, SA. Independent, 1 store, men's outfitter.

They Said It

"You can tell the whole industry I take a dim view of it." - Lionel Astill, Italian Leathers, Durban, KZN, SA, on load shedding. That is perhaps the one view that the entire country shares, Eskom's management excepted.

Bovine: The average hide price over the past week was R1.60/kg green. NB* Hide prices are determined by the average of the RMAA (Red Meat Abattoir Association) and independent companies.
