Retail last week

Comment from 4 retailers on Saturday - location and a positive attitude help
"Since Black Friday, trade has been up and down. In the week after Black Friday, trade was good. Last week, there were less feet in our mall stores, and trade slowed down. Is Black Friday good? It creates a lot of hype, but at the wrong time of year. In our case we had a very good Black Friday last year. This year our sales remained the same, we didn't offer the same scale of discounts. There are a number of other factors affecting trade: The biggest factor has been load shedding. On average, 25 of our stores in smaller towns could not trade because there was no alternate energy supply. The rain that we needed so badly was a deterrent in some areas because it was so heavy. There's a lot of promotional activity and all the major retailers are offering substantial discounts to get business within the festive season, ahead of the January Sales" - Nicole van Donnick, marketing manager, John Craig. Men's National Clothing chain.

"December is always a poor month for us, with turnover 20% down on our normal business. Our customers are away on holiday. Business picks up for us after January 15." - Niaz Bhati, financial manager, Khalique's and Jones & Kent, up-market men's outfitters, Johannesburg, Gauteng, SA.

"We've had a drop. Foot traffic is down. Customers are looking for cheaper price, especially, and cheaper quality. We didn't take part in Black Friday, but we did have an increase in sales over that period." - Mohammed Omar Vally, member, Kiddies' Specialists, Durban, KZN, SA. Independent, children's clothing and footwear.

"It's picked up but it's still down on last year. Let's talk after Christmas." - MF Ebrahim, member, Kinky Shoes, Johannesburg, Gauteng, SA. Mini-chain, family footwear.

They Said It

"Now I'm going to have to stress about it the whole holiday. I'm not going away, so maybe I should write all of my articles for next year over the holiday!!!" - Dr Clive Jackson-Moss of the International School of Tanning Technology in Grahamstown on the columns he writes for S&V African Leather. I like to remind my correspondents about their duties - frequently.

ABSA Agri Trends 13/12: Hides & skins prices

Hides: The current average hide price is R1.43/skin, this is 1.1% higher than last week’s price of R1.41/skin. The current price is 11.2% lower than prices were a month ago and the current hide price is 62.7% lower than prices were a year ago. The local market remains stable. Locally the closure of automotive plants for the holidays will keep prices at the current low levels in the short to medium term. The price of merino skins was down by 5.3% from R45.71/skin to R43.29/skin this week. The Dorper skin price was up by 11.2% week on week at R34.17/skin. Compared to a year ago the price of dorper skins is 11.27% higher and the price of merino skins is 53.20% lower. - Conce Moraba, agricultural economist, Absa Group. NB* Hide prices are determined by the average of the RMAA (Red Meat Abattoir Association) and independent companies.
