Good news last week

Tracking SA's recovery in the headlines:
Ex-Eskom bosses, Tubular Construction executives charged over R30m Kusile kickbacks saga - Daily Maverick 2019 12 19

Retail last week

Overall, better than expected
"Not bad - not great, but compared to the year we've had, it's an improvement. So far so good, and we're feeling more positive than we have been all year. We had a shoe promotion and we sold quite a lot of women's shoes, especially - we didn't get the turnover that we got for the same promotion last year, but people are buying down and we were selling cheaper shoes. Consumers are waiting for specials." - Mark Kingon, member, Kingon's, East London, E Cape, SA. Independent department store.

"Quite good. Better than expected and up on last year." - Mandy Mana, member, Koco Bino, Johannesburg, Gauteng, SA. Independent infants' and children's clothing and footwear.

"Black Friday has changed the whole trend of Christmas shopping; it's become the new Christmas, and you have to be part of it, whether you like it or not. We had a very good Black Friday, especially for our big ticket items. In December, people are buying smaller items. Overall, it's gone well, showing both unit and turnover growth." - Anton Klopper, director, Klopper's, Bloemfontein, Free State, SA. Independent and online department store.

"So far we're up. People are reluctant to buy expensive goods, so we bought according to that and it's working very well for us." - Yusuf Nakooda, member, Giorgio Sport and Le Mans, KwaDukuza, KZN, SA. Independent, sport fashion and men's outfitter.

"December trading isn't what it should be, but we're carrying on. Black Friday was very good for us, but that event, and people battling, have affected December." - Waleed Mahomed, manager, KM Stores, Pretoria, Gauteng, SA. Independent men's outfitter.

Closing

Newcastle, KZN, SA – Latiff's Boutique will close early in the New Year, member JA Latiff said last week. He said he and his wife would be retiring.

They Said It

"Comfortably out of the trade and so happy." - Lynn Kogel (née Hunter), formerly of Bob Hunter Agencies, who is now working with her husband in their hairdressing business.

"So you're alive? Oh, bad luck." - Garth Ribbink of Greenaways (Natal) to me on Friday. He'd received a call from ex-shoe industry person Johnny Rodinis, who'd seen a death notice for a 'Tony Dixon' (I'm Dickson). Having satisfied himself that I was still alive, and sounding a bit disappointed about it, he added: "Well, if you owe any money, now's the time to duck."
