Covid: Its effect on footwear last year

Durban, KZN, SA – Footwear manufacturing and footwear imports dropped by almost identical percentages last year, SAFLIA executive director Jirka Vymĕtal said last week.
Local manufacturing dropped by 20.04%, from 56.9 to 45.5 million pairs, while imports dropped by 20.6%, from 199 to 158.1 million pairs.
The value of locally manufactured footwear, based on ex-factory sales, dropped by 11.8%, from R6.38 billion to R5.62 billion. Weekly employment fell by 16.9%, from 10 622 to 8 831 workers.
Exports, excluding to other SACU members, fell by 16.8%, from 3.5 to 2.92 million pairs.

Wages: Footwear sector to renegotiate

Durban, KZN, SA – General secretary of the National Bargaining Council, Gerald Naidoo confirmed that SAFLIA has written to the National Bargaining Council requesting an engagement with the unions to consider cancelling the 3rd leg of the multi-year wage settlement agreement reached in 2019 which requires an implementation of a 7.5% wage increase from 1 July 2021. The 7.5% 2020 increase was delayed until January this year. The unions have in the meantime agreed to consult with their members.
He said he had not yet heard from SATEO, the employers' association in the tanning sector, which also has a multi-year agreement.
Negotiations in the general goods sector, which has a year-to-year agreement, will begin in May.

Nike reportedly cutting ties with 6 more retailers

Sourcing Journal reported on March 26 that "mMonths after cutting ties with nine retail partners, Nike  has notified another six retailers — including DSW  and Urban Outfitters — that it will no longer sell them product, according to Sam Poser, an equity analyst at Williams Trading. The list also includes Shoe Show, Dunham’s Sports, Olympia Sports and Big 5 Sporting Goods.

Kalinka: Closed borders keep shoppers at home

Maputo, Mozambique – Business is "steady", according to Bhavesh Taylor, owner of the 2 store Kalinka family outfitters.
"We had 3 or 4 months of complete lockdown, but since then it's been okay," he said, "which means we're surviving. It has helped that because the borders are closed, people are doing most of their shopping locally, where previously a lot of shopping would have been done in Nelspruit, in South Africa." Nelspruit is around 200 km from Maputo.
He said most of his merchandise comes from South Africa, and that there were "no problems" with supply.
"Of course, business isn't as good as it used to be, but compared to what we hear from other countries, like South Africa, we're doing quite well."

Competition Tribunal

Tribunal approves Mr Price acquisition of Otto Brothers Distributors with conditions to promote local procurement

Pretoria, Gauteng, SA (March 26, 2021) – The Competition Tribunal has conditionally approved the merger whereby Mr Price Group Limited will acquire the retail apparel business operated by Otto Brothers Distributors (Pty) Ltd and its subsidiaries, trading as Power Fashion.
The Tribunal has concluded that the transaction is unlikely to substantially prevent or lessen competition in any market in South Africa. However, conditions have been imposed on the merger to promote local procurement within the Mr Price Group post-merger. This follows concerns raised by the Minister of the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition in relation to local procurement. As such, the merged entity must ensure that:

  * Power Fashion maintains or improves its current level of locally procured goods and services; and
* Power Fashion participates in the DTIC’s Retail, Clothing, Textile, Footwear and Leather (R-CTFL) Masterplan initiative along with the rest of the Mr Price Group. This DTIC initiative seeks to, among others, increase the share of local retail sales of locally manufactured clothing and footwear to 65% by 2030.

"He's a different level of bad." - Laurence Lotzoff of Hush Puppies' distributor Dale Footwear, about a (very) bad retail account.

"I'm totally Zoomed out." - SAFLIA executive director Jirka Vymĕtal on the new normal.
