Wagner Designer Collection: More downs than ups

Johannesburg, Gauteng, SA – Trading "wasn't great" over the weekend, said Pravin Dhulab, proprietor of men's upmarket outfitter Wagner Designer Collection in Fourways.
"It's been tough generally," he said, speaking at lunchtime yesterday. "You get one good day, then four or five poor ones. Today, for example, we haven't had one sale."
He said the business had tried every strategy it could think of to improve sales, "but with so many people working from home, they don't want or need good quality clothing. I think we've just got to hang in there until the situation improves."

Urban Mania: Hoping online will make a difference

Cape Town, W. Cape, SA – Trading "wasn't that good", said Shahid Koor, proprietor of sport fashion retailer Urban Mania in Wynberg.
"There has been a bit of a pickup, but it's completely different from before. Even before the lockdown, government had made a bit of a mess, and there was high unemployment. Here in the Western Cape, the lockdown has led to big job losses in the tourism and hospitality sector.
"On top of that, certain brands have restructured their distribution, which has taken away a huge chunk of our business."
Urban Mania has made 2 changes to adjust: Over the past 18 months, it has increased its children's wear business substantially, to good effect, and it expects its online retail portal to come into operation in the next few weeks.

Footwear consumption 'recovering'

According to World Footwear, there will be a 'slight recovery' in global footwear consumption this year. It is forecasting a 2.8% increase. Pre-pandemic levels "won't be reached before 2023", it says.

'Another 80 000 US stores could close'

That's the heading in an article in Sourcing Journal yesterday. It said another 80 000 stores could close by 2026. "Apparel has the most to lose, per analysis from UBS, which says store closings could nearly double if e-commerce's hot streak continues."

They Said It

"Feedback by Christmas?" - National Clothing Retail Federation executive director Michael Lawrence when asked yesterday when he could give me feedback about how his chain members had traded over the weekend. Oh, and he added a string of laughing faces.

"In any event, we aren't up against the hard lockdown of last year, so whilst the growths are ridiculously high, they don’t really mean a lot." - TFG CEO Anthony Thunström, responding to a request for comment on Easter trading.

Johannesburg, Gauteng, SA (April 01, 2021) - The current average hide price increased by 5.9% to 6.33/kg from R5.98/kg a week ago. The current price is 21.8% higher than the average price a month ago and is 578.6% higher than the average price a year ago.
