Shoe Junxion: End of grants hurts retail

Sasolburg, Free State, SA – The phasing out of the Covid-related monthly R350 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grants has been felt at retail, Shoe Junxion director Kirit Mistry said.
"All the various grants and pensions are paid at the beginning of the month, and we see an increase in sales between the 1st and the 6th of each month. Last month we noticed the effect of that grant being stopped."
He said Shoe Junxion was stocking more unbranded lines than before, "and we try to get a sale from every foot that comes in the door".
On the rental side, he said Shoe Junxion received rental assistance from its landlord, while the other shops in the CBD mall had different landlords "who may have offered some relief in some way or the other".
"We're taking every month as it comes," he said.

Memories: Dependent on tourism upswing

Knysna, W. Cape, SA – Memories, which sells and eclectic mix of footwear, leather goods, headwear and jewellery, "is very reliant on tourists, international and local," said Morné Pienaar, son of the owner, Corrie Hofmeyr. He owned a similar business, with the same name, in Bloemfontein before closing it and joining his mother.
"Not having any international tourists has affected the business very badly. Thanks to local tourists, Easter and the few weeks after Easter weren't bad, but they've gone now, and it's very quiet."
The next major event on the tourist calendar is the Knysna Oyster Festival, in July. "They've changed the format of the sports events," he said. "We have to hope it will be a success."
He said that under current conditions, the business couldn't survive on its own, so they're setting up a second business offering holiday accommodation.
He said the landlord had "really come to the party", with reduced rent. There are empty shops in Knysna Mall, including one opposite Memories.
Suppliers, too, had been understanding. "We've ordered less, so there's not too much debt."
"I try to be positive," he said. "We'll see which way to go."
