Footwear sector wage increase finalised

By Gerald Naidoo, general secretary and principal officer, National Bargaining Council of the Leather Industry of SA Durban, KZN, SA – The parties in the Footwear Sector have reached agreement on amendments to the multi-year settlement agreement reached during the 2019 wage negotiations as follows:
Wages and Wage Rates: With effect from 1 July 2021, a 6.25% increase on all prescribed wage rates will be implemented. A further 0.25% increase (calculated on wage rates as it existed on 30 June 2021) will be implemented on all prescribed wage rates with effect from 1 January 2022
Severance Pay: Employees who are retrenched during the period 1 July 2021 and 30 June 2022 shall have their severance pay calculated at the rate of pay as it existed on 30 June 2021 plus 7.5%.

Update on other sectors are as follows:

Tanning Sector The parties in the sector are still in discussions on the possible review of 2019 settlement agreement that provides for a 7.5% wage increase to be implemented from 1 July 2021. The next meeting will be held on 28th June 2021.

General Goods & Handbag Sector A third round of wage negotiations was held virtually on 22 June 2021 whereat the parties failed to reach settlement. The trade unions have declared a dispute of mutual interest and the matter will be set down for conciliation on a date still to be determined.

They Said It

"Tony my apologies, hellish cold weather came in from South and I must have had brain freeze!!" - Tannery consultant Johnny Kleynhans on a late response. Well, South Africa probably is to blame for most things that go wrong there.
