Acquisition

Intershu acquires Gino Paoli, Cosmo closes

Johannesburg, Gauteng, SA – Intershu has bought the Gino Paoli brand from Cape Town, W. Cape-based Cosmo Footwear, which has subsequently closed.
Cosmo had stopped using it for women's footwear, but Intershu will use it for both genders, director Donny Christoforakis said.
He handled negotiations with Cosmo MD Michael Fleischmann.
Two Gino Paoli agents, Malcolm Palmer, covering the W. Cape, and Mervin Sifris, covering Gauteng and neighbouring areas, have moved across to Intershu.

Tenders

New army boots? Are there or aren't there?

Pretoria, Gauteng, SA – There was a flurry of emails on Friday after a report originally published in news channel Ground Up, and reproduced in Carla Finlay's News Briefs to the Clothing & Textile Trade, carried an article headlined 'Local manufacture of army's new uniforms will create jobs'.
The report was clear on a decision to develop local fabric for the uniforms, but in the last paragraph, it said: "New boots for soldiers had been supplied since the beginning of July."
Arveen Boodhoo, MD of Dick Whittington Shoes, which has made all the army's boots for years, said he was not aware of new boots, and they hadn't come from Dicks. An email to the National Treasury's Contract Management Division, which coordinates the tenders for major government departments, didn't get a response, but an email to Dr Jaywant Irkhede, director: leather & footwear at the Department of Trade, Industry & Competition (DTIC), had him burning up the wires, not just to Treasury, but to several people at Armscor as well.
      Interesting to see what transpires.

Logistics

Jumbo: 'We want to source locally'

By Dionne Prinsloo, Allied Agencies, on behalf of Jumbo Footwear
Durban, KZN, SA – Local manufacturing / sourcing is undoubtedly a very desirable avenue to overcoming long delays of shipments of finished footwear out of China . Whilst local manufacturers may have the necessary equipment, labour and production capacity, the limiting factor is that they would largely also be at the mercy of shipping /imports out of the likes of China. Nevertheless one is hopeful, in the greater context, that local manufacture has the opportunity to remerge prosperously to levels of production pre-1994. We certainly are determined to work with local manufacture that are able to execute our needs.

Manufacturing

Change in focus for Bronx

By Gerrit Sander, sales & development for Bolton Footwear's Bronx brand
Cape Town, W. Cape, SA – The Bronx brand has shifted from where it was 10 to 15 years ago with the focus now solely on locally manufactured product. Bronx footwear offers rugged contemporary footwear for today’s modern man.
The Bronx designer, Gordon Gassert, who has been working for Bolton Footwear for more than 20 years, has created a range of younger looking styles which addresses the needs of the 25 - 35-year-old market and serves to prove we can offer appealing Bronx shoes for most consumers looking for quality contemporary footwear.
We believe that we are definitely on the right track in taking the brand forward and are excited about the future! There will be challenges ahead for Bronx, but these further serve to make the brand stronger. Watch this space!

They Said It

"Billy never went to Grosvenor. He went to DHS, was expelled (🤣🤣🤣) and then went to Mansfield." - André Rive, retired former owner of Durban, KZN, SA-based Awesome Marketing, on fellow retiree and now Australian resident Billy Robinson. This conversation arose out of discussions about the remarkable group who matriculated from Grosvenor Boys' High on the Bluff and went on to careers in the footwear industry. Which just goes to show, Billy, that your past always catches up with you.

"I'm a nearly retired dog groomer." - Former Cape Town, W. Cape, SA footwear agent 'Carrots' Doyle, who couldn't sit around doing nothing after she retired from footwear. Her business name: 'The Red Setter' - a nickname given to her by the late John Lailvaux. If you hadn't guessed it by now, she's a redhead. Another They Said It from her in next week's newsletter.

ABSA Agri Trends: Hides & skins prices

Johannesburg, Gauteng, SA (11 November 2021) - The current average hide price decreased by 0.7% to R4.64/kg from R4.67kg a week ago. The current price is 26% lower than the average price a month ago and is 26% higher than the average price a year ago. The range of prices reported was as follows: Minimum price: R4.33 Maximum price: R5.80. Please note, we have changed our methodology and price levels are not directly comparable to previous prices that we reported on. Our methodology weighs the prices we collect according to the number of hides they sell in a month. This is done to make it more representative of the prevailing market price. NB* Hide prices are determined by the average of the RMAA (Red Meat Abattoir Association) and independent companies. - Marlene Louw, senior agricultural economist, and Nkhensani Mashimbyi, agricultural economist, Absa group.
