December retailing

All Star Fashions: Better than expected, and hoping the trend will continue

Harry Bawa, director
Vereeniging, Gauteng, SA – December has been decent, and better than we expected following a tough year. We did our fair share, last week was very strong, and we made budget.
I'm expecting this trend to continue into January. Covid isn't as strong as in Europe and elsewhere, and we're better off than we were this time last year.

'I'll have to find new brands'

Sport fashion retailer who wanted to remain nameless
Port Elizabeth, E. Cape, SA – We're definitely down by comparison with last year.
The international brands aren't giving us the service they were giving us before. They're more focused on their own online and the 4 or 5 groups they've partnered with.
My problem is I've been selling the same few brands for many, many years, and those are what my customers want and expect from me.
Now I'm having to experiment with other international brands, and it's expensive and hit-and-miss. The problem is not what you sell, it's what you can't sell.
Local brands? I'm not saying they don't sell, but they don't sell to my customers.
I don't know what to expect of January, but I hope it won't be worse than last January.

Bachelors Classic: Quiet, but a bit better

Ash Parekh, manager
Umhlanga, KZN, SA – It's been quiet, but a bit better than last year because there wasn't a lockdown or other restrictions.
There have been a lot of tourists again, but that doesn't really affect us.
January? We'll just have to wait and see. That's all we can do.

Wage Agreements

All parties now covered

Pretoria, Gauteng, SA – In the Government Gazette of 10 December, the Minister of Labour extended the collective wage agreements in the 3 sections of the National Bargaining Council of the Leather Industry of SA - Tanning, Footwear, and General Goods & Handbags - to 'non-parties' operating in those sections.
Wage agreements are concluded between employer organisations and unions. 'Non-parties' are manufacturers in those sections who do not belong to employer organisations, and workers who are not union members.
NBC general secretary Gerald Naidoo explained as follows:
"In principle the parties agree to extend the period of operation of the base collective agreement for periods of 5 years at a time. This base agreements will consist of all the conditions of employment that has been negotiated over the years. So on an annual basis the parties would negotiate for wage increases and at times some improvements on conditions of employment. These settlement agreements reached during the annual wage negotiations will be considered as amendments to the existing collective agreements (base agreements). The importance of having the base agreements extended for a long period is to ensure that even if the parties do not conclude their wage negotiations before 30 June of that year there  will be an existing collective agreement that is binding and can be enforced albeit it would be on the old terms and conditions of employment.
"So the amendments that emanated from the 2021 wage negotiations was extended to non parties on 10 December 2021 and becomes effective from 20 December 2021."

Court Case

Revelation: Directors charged for provident money theft

Germiston, Gauteng, SA – Directors of the liquidated Revelation Luggage & Leather (Pty) Ltd, Alexandra Astalos and Ramila Narendra Jasmath, have been charged for deducting approximately R154 000 provident fund monies from employees and not paying over the contributions to the Leather Industry Provident Fund, according to a report.
After warrants had been issued for their arrest, they handed themselves in to the Hawks' serious commercial crime office in Germiston on 10 December, appeared in court and were released on R5000 bail.
They are due to appear in court again on 09 February. - More Info

Happy hols

They Said It

With the new year almost upon us, I sought some inspiration from the Oxford University Press Dictionary of Quotations:

"You can never plan the future by the past." - Edmund Burke (1729-1797)

"Some future day when what is now is not, when all old faults and follies are forgot." - Arthur Hugh Clough (1819-1861)

ABSA Agri Trends: Hides & skins prices

Johannesburg, Gauteng, SA (15 December 2021) - The current average hide price increased by 3.4% to R5.50/kg from R5.30kg a week ago. The current price is 18% higher than the average price a month ago and is 40% higher than the average price a year ago. The range of prices reported was as follows: Minimum price: R4.94 Maximum price: R5.80. Please note, we have changed our methodology and price levels are not directly comparable to previous prices that we reported on. Our methodology weighs the prices we collect according to the number of hides they sell in a month. This is done to make it more representative of the prevailing market price. NB* Hide prices are determined by the average of the RMAA (Red Meat Abattoir Association) and independent companies. - Marlene Louw, senior agricultural economist, and Nkhensani Mashimbyi, agricultural economist, Absa group.
