Crime

As if load shedding isn't bad enough...

Durban, KZN, SA – Scores of businesses in the Sunset Avenue area of Woodhurst, Chatsworth, including 10 footwear manufacturers, are suffering regular power outages caused by illegal power connections.
Tego Footwear's Mohamed Vanker said the illegal connections from the sub-station which serves the avenue, and which run into "a very big informal settlement", caused power to trip "probably once a week".
"Sometimes the power is off for a couple of hours, occasionally for days, but the problem is we have to send the workers home - so we lose a day or part of a day no matter how quickly it's switched back on. The workers, many of whom live in that settlement, lose wages as well.
"Occasionally, the municipality arrives and cuts off the connections, but they're too scared to do much more, and the cables are soon back."
He said that was aside from outages caused by cable theft - and, of course, load shedding. He said 20 businesses in the avenue were paying a security company R50 000 a month to stop cable theft and illegal dumping, "and so far, in the 2 weeks we've had them, there hasn't been any".
He said businesses in the avenue have asked the municipality to provide the settlement with its own sub-station.
The affected footwear factories are: Delano Footwear, Elahi Footwear, Kad Shoes, Nasron Footwear, Novita Shoes, Portside Footwear, Sands Footwear, SOP Footwear, Step Sure Footwear and Tego Footwear.

They Said It

"Please keep that picture safe…. I still have a pic of you with the wansie that I will be forced to use in my defence, should the need arise." - Vanessa Ronald, BBF Safety Group, of an unplanned evening get-together of A-OSH exhibitors and visitors at our hotel during which she changed from work clothes to wansie for warmth. Regrettably, I can't share images with readers for the reason above, which is on the same principle of 'mutually assured destruction' as nuclear deterrence. However, picture a unicorn in striped pastel shades...

"My research and that of medical colleagues in KZN points to data showing that 25% of South Africa's adult population is diabetic. This affects our workforce. So often the education and treatment comes too late to prevent amputations. It's a ridiculous situation." - Podiatrist Dr Anette Thompson, Durban, KZN, SA, in a presentation at the A-OSH exhibition in Midrand, Gauteng, last week.
