Waiting for summer season to kick in

Durban, KZN, SA - "We're waiting for something to take off," said Garth Ribbink of synthetic upper materials supplier A. Greenaways (Natal). It's all dull. Summer is starting now but the build up has been slow."

Durban, KZN, SA - Sales are still quiet, said Rowan Allison, who sells for Midland Leather. "A couple of the factories are busy, some others aren't. Normally it's buzzing by now, but so far it's quieter than last year."
He said it appeared some of the chains had ordered, but others hadn't.
He said he also thought there were "a lot of synthetics around".

Durban, KZN, SA - Tego Footwear proprietor Mohamed Vanker said he was full to November. "We make 1 500 pairs a day, and we can fill that," he said. "Bigger factories are struggling because they're harder to fill. We're also better off because we make men's. The guys doing women's are finding it more difficult."
He said Tego, formerly an all-leather factory, is now 95% synthetic, "because those are the price points the chains want".
That does bring its own problems. "You have to book well in advance from China now - booking has moved from 3 to 6 months." He said Tego makes most of its other components - largely bottomstock - in house.

Brands

Arno moves back to Jozi

Johannesburg, Gauteng, SA - Wholesaler Ismail Cassim & Sons cc has acquired the Arno men's footwear brand from Tego Footwear. Further information on its plans will follow.
Arno originally belonged to Villani Shoes, and was its principal leather moccasin, smart casual and sandal brand. From the 1990s until Villani closed its factory in 2015, it was a very popular home-grown brand.
Villani Shoes member Marco Di Lembo, who died in April last year, sold it to Tego Footwear in Durban.

Retail

A retailer who's had enough

Ahmed Sibda, owner of City Fashions Benoni
Benoni, Gauteng, SA - After  38 years in the retail  fashion trade, I have  finally  closed my door  and thrown in the  towel. The fun  in the  retail rag and leather trade has gone. An incompetent  government  and  a  minister of  trade who is a  former  unionist  must be  thanked for the  situation in South Africa together with the Chinese. Almost all our local industries are dying. Unemployment  is rising daily, and our very poor currency is among many other ills facing us. The challenges are just too much....which potholes do we fill? And what about the holes in the pockets of the battling poor?

ABSA Agri Trends: Hides & skins prices

Johannesburg, Gauteng, SA (11 August 2022) - The current average hide price increased slightly by 0.2% to R4.11/kg from R4.10/kg a week ago. The current price is the same as the average price a month ago and is 59% lower than the average price a year ago. The range of prices reported was as follows: Minimum price: R4.00 Maximum price: R5.00. Please note: Our methodology weighs the prices we collect according to the number of hides they sell in a month. This is done to make it more representative of the prevailing market price. NB* Hide prices are determined by the average of the RMAA (Red Meat Abattoir Association) and independent companies. - Marlene Louw, senior agricultural economist, and Nkhensani Mashimbyi, agricultural economist, Absa group.
