Competition Tribunal

Shoprite bid for Massmart food business goes before Competition Tribunal today

Pretoria, Gauteng, SA (04 September 2022) - The Competition Tribunal will today hear submissions relating to the proposed large merger wherein Shoprite Supermarkets (Pty) Ltd intends to acquire the following from Massmart Holdings Limited:
* 56 retail supermarket stores and 43 retail liquor stores operated under the brand names Rhino Cash & Carry, Rhino Liquors, Cambridge Food and Cambridge Food Liquor;
* 10 wholesale (Cash and Carry) stores;
* 2 wholesale liquor stores; and
* Massfresh, with two entities, a meat processing plant facility and Fruitspot (comprising 3 processing facilities in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg) (collectively the “target businesses”).
      The target businesses are active in the retail and wholesale trade of grocery, liquor and associated items and are wholly owned and controlled by Massmart. Massmart is, in turn, controlled by Walmart Inc.
      The Competition Commission, which investigates large mergers before referring such to the Tribunal for a decision, has recommended that the proposed transaction be approved subject to a set of conditions, including various public interest conditions.
      During the three-day merger hearing, the Tribunal will hear and consider submissions from the Commission, the merger parties, the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (“the dtic”) and two intervenors, being Pick n Pay and Spar.
      Those wishing to follow the online proceedings are requested to contact the Tribunal’s Communications Officer (contact details below) for the online hearing link: Gillian de Gouveia, Communications Officer, on behalf of the Competition Tribunal of South Africa. 'The joy has gone out of making shoes'

Alistair Watt, member, Bresan Footwear cc
Pietermaritzburg, KZN, SA - 2022 has most definitely been one of our most challenging years in a long time. The year started off positively, and we have had a few busy months, but overall we are trading way down on previous years.
        Staff absenteeism, material supply problems and rising costs are serious challenges which have sucked the enjoyment out of making shoes.
        The factory hasn't had too much short time this year and is currently working a 5 day week, but production volumes are way down.
      We experienced a definite dip in orders for July and August but September is looking ok, however our order book for the last few months of the year is not even close to looking like it did in years gone by.

In case you missed it!

They Said It

"I think you are being far too kind to me with those words. Are you sick? I am not sure if anyone ever reads the cxxx that I write." - Dr Clive Jackson-Moss, ISST, Grahamstown, E. Cape, SA, in response to my appreciation for his article in the September edition of S&V African Leather.

"Very informative articles and one can learn a lot from them. Great stuff. Thank you." - Mahesh Nagessar, standards writer, SA Bureau of Standards, Pretoria, Gauteng, SA, writing about the same issue. And one of those articles was by...Dr Jackson-Moss. I think Mahesh is one of many readers who feel that way.

ABSA Agri Trends: Hides & skins prices

Johannesburg, Gauteng, SA (01 September 2022) - The current average hide price increased by 0.9% to R4.54/kg from R4.50/kg a week ago. The current price is 10.4% higher than the average price a month ago and 49.3% lower than the average price a year ago. The range of prices reported was as follows: Minimum price: R4.00 Maximum price: R5.00. Please note: Our methodology weighs the prices we collect according to the number of hides they sell in a month. This is done to make it more representative of the prevailing market price. NB* Hide prices are determined by the average of the RMAA (Red Meat Abattoir Association) and independent companies. - Marlene Louw, senior agricultural economist, and Nkhensani Mashimbyi, agricultural economist, Absa group.
