Black Friday: Further response

Boardriders
Durban, KZN, SA  – "A lot of retailers have told me they didn't have a good Black Friday," said Boardriders sales and marketing manager Dane Patterson. "We had a fantastic period."
      "Boardriders opened Black Friday to Boardriders Club members from Friday 18th to Sunday 20th and then to public from Monday 21st. They added styles daily to entice customers back. The BF period ended Sunday 27th.
      "E-commerce was 75% up on the same period last year, and we spent the same amount promoting it as we did last year.
      "The figures for the retail stores were a bit skewed because we used it as a period to liquidate older stock with substantial discounts - R49 for Sandals and R99 for closed shoes, for example.
      "Our Quiksilver stores were 24% up on last year, and our Billabong stores were 215% up. People were coming in and spending thousands at a time.
      "We sacrificed margin, but we cleared a lot of older stock."

Dodo Shoes
Kelli Kupritz, marketing director
Johannesburg, Gauteng, SA - Both our Dodos and Franco Ceccato chains were double digits up on 2021 which was double digits up on 2020. We had an excellent offer which our customers voted for with their feet.
      It was extremely challenging trading during load shedding where sales had to be written up manually. Our staff worked extremely hard over this weekend. We ended our offer on Sunday night.
      Here’s hoping for an excellent December period.

Kelly's Shoe Store
Nazeer Abraham, director
Nelspruit, Mpumalanga, SA - It had a good response this year - better than last year 2021.

Kenya tightens counterfeit regulations

Adams & Adams Attorneys
On 29 November 2022, the Anti-Counterfeit Authority (ACA) issued and circulated a Public Notice no. 3/2022, essentially reiterating that the Mandatory recordal of intellectual property rights for importation purposes will be implemented on 1st January 2023. The ACA advised that further extension/s of the implementation of the Recordation Regulations are not contemplated at this stage.
      Importers are urged to declare the intellectual property rights applied to the relevant goods via the Kentrade’s Single Window System prior to the importation. The ACA indicated that, after the implementation date, it will prioritize enforcement of the following categories of products/goods:-
1. Alcoholic beverages;
2. Electronics and Electricals;
3. Pharmaceuticals;
4. Apparel;
5. Footwear; and
  6. Cosmetics
      The ACA further emphasised that the recordal exercise is a trade facilitation measure aimed at promoting legitimate trade and proactively protecting intellectual property rights by the ACA and other Government Agencies through verification of imports.
      As the implementation deadline is fast approaching, it is advisable to collate the required information and documentation with the aim of submitting the recordal application as soon as possible, bearing in mind that the ACA is required to approved or reject the application within 30 days from date of submission or filing.
      If you require any assistance pertaining to the recordal, please do not hesitate to contact us on kenyaacarecordals@adams.africa.

They Said It

"I should have corrected you last year. It’s not as bad as what is in today. My birthdate is 29-11-1940, not 1930." - Mike Samuel, agent, Durban, KZN, SA. Humble apologies, Mike. I'm the one who FEELS that old.

"I HAVE been told that I’m a wee bit pedantic." - Hugo Zuanni, Leather Link, Cape Town, W. Cape, SA. A wee bit? His complaint: In last week's Black Friday report, I wrote that I had asked retailers for a 1-sentence response. Most sent more, so he wrote: "I see there is only one retailer than can read and gave you a ONE sentence comment …" I had to explain that in my email to retailers, I had said they were welcome to write more, but that I was keeping it simple to encourage more feedback. "You didn't say that in the newsletter," he responded sniffily. I consider myself chastised.

"Hi

OK

Regards"
- What must qualify as the shortest response possible to the Black Friday query. This was from Gavin Sack of Kinky Shoes, Johannesburg, Gauteng, SA. Mr Zuanni, I trust you approve?

"I'm 87 and a quarter, that's why I'm having a late lie in at 10am." - Bev Jack, retired former director of the Leather Institute of Zimbabwe, Harare.
