We only received a couple of responses to request for comment on trading last week, so we've decided to hold them over for next week, when we will be looking particularly at back-to-school trade.

How our parallel institutions keep SA functioning

New Year's eve was pretty catastrophic in the Dickson household. At around 1 am, after the fireworks were over (more about them in a moment), some of our frazzled dogs got into a slugfest - well bitefest, really.
One of them, who arrived on our road 5 years ago weighing not much more than the legion of fleas on her back, was quite badly hurt, and I had a bite on each hand.
Much of yesterday was spent on her operation and my tetanus shot, and I felt it really wasn't such a great start to a new year.
But while the incident was very unpleasant, the response was actually remarkable testimony to the efficiency of the private sector. My treatment at Entabeni Hospital was very efficient, thorough and polite, and because I have medical aid, free.
Millie's treatment at Westville Veterinary Hospital - on a public holiday - was equally efficient, thorough and polite. No medical aid, so it was an expense I hadn't budgeted for, but that's a lesson.
The important point is that I doubt a visit to a state hospital would have been comparable. And yet, not that many years ago, before private hospitals became such a big industry in SA, it would have been. I did vac jobs at Frere Hospital in East London, and I can speak from experience.
We need more privatisation, not less.
Oh, and those fireworks. In our neighbourhood, in previous years, the volume and duration have been terrible. This year, not so much. Perhaps we have less disposable income to thank for that.
