Easter trading forecast

Dane Patterson, Boardriders
Durban, KZN, SA - We at Boardriders are expecting a decent Easter period. Although retail has proved challenging over the last 2-3 months, we do expect a nice spike in April. Last year Easter sales were decimated in KZN with beach closures and reduced holiday makers so it can only get better this year.

David Fox, Choice Clothing
Cape Town, W. Cape, SA - We are offering great deals in all areas at unbeatable prices within the retail sector. Yes, I expect shoppers to show up. People generally will do last minute shopping, particularly if they are aware of great deals.

Kim Cunniffe, Kingsmead Shoes
Durban, KZN, SA - Hoping for strong weekend sales, what with holidaymakers around and the change of season, which should encourage customers to purchase winter merchandise.

Gavin Sack, Kinky Shoes
Johannesburg, Gauteng, SA - Easter trade in the past was like a mini xmas. Not anymore. Nonetheless I still expect some increased turnover.

Nichol Hodgson, Mr Matata
Pongola, KZN, SA - Over our Easter trading period we are expecting a significant boost in consumer consumption expenditure, due to our high volume of new ranges available. We also offer wide ranges of brand names in fashion as well as in sport and fitness, which are not only eye-catching but affordable as well.

Bernard Mostert, Mr Tekkie
George, W. Cape, SA - The South African consumer remains under heavy pressure and hence every sale counts and customer service, staff well-being and product knowledge is key in order to maintain the momentum that we have. As with most expectations in South Africa in the last 18 months we don't think Easter will be as depressed as it is forecasted to be but we do believe that it will challenging.

Urgent appeal to importers from the National Consumer Commission: Help us help you cut down your waiting times

Pretoria, Gauteng, SA - The National Consumer Commission (NCC) requests all importers of CTFL goods to complete a questionnaire on a research study covering the cost of compliance with the Consumer Protection Act No 68 of 2008. This is to enable the NCC to assist importers in understanding the provisions of the CPA, establish any challenges experienced, and to provide suggestions in terms of improving compliance.
The deadline for submitting the questionnaire is 15 April.

They Said It

"At least you can see that I am going to church nowadays. LOL. Hehehehe." - Benedict Plaatjies, Cordova Leathers, Pietermaritzburg, KZN, SA. Well I wouldn't go THAT far, no. But he did write a true-to-life obituary for fellow tanner Anthony Pearce, which will appear in the April issue of S&V African Leather, out on Wednesday.

"When I got here, I apologised because I think my shoes were made in China. Then I learnt that all your shoes are made there, too." - Reverend Clive Jacobson, who gave an address at the memorial service for Crown Footwear founder Bob Brown last week.

ABSA Agri Trends: Hides & skins prices

Johannesburg, Gauteng, SA (23 March 2023) - The current average hide price decreased by 9.5% to R3.80/kg from R4.20/kg a week ago. The current price is 9.5% lower than the average price a month ago and 45.1% lower than the average price a year ago. The range of prices reported was as follows: Minimum price: R3.60 Maximum price: R5.00. Please note: Our methodology weighs the prices we collect according to the number of hides they sell in a month. This is done to make it more representative of the prevailing market price. NB* Hide prices are determined by the average of the RMAA (Red Meat Abattoir Association) and independent companies. - Marlene Louw, senior agricultural economist, and Nkhensani Mashimbyi, agricultural economist, Absa group.
