Retailing

Load shedding despondency hits shops

Muhammad Laher, Bombay’s of Nigel/Sports Fusion
Nigel, Gauteng, SA - This has been the toughest start to the year for many years. There are many issues, including of course load shedding and the rising costs of essential products.
That is reflected in the spending patterns in apparel - our school wear sales are doing much better than fashion wear.
There’s not much we can do except to reduce margins, buy smaller quantities, and offer less variety. I believe all retailers, including the chains, are doing much the same.

Anonymous
Johannesburg, Gauteng, SA - Things are very quiet, and there are many factors affecting us: Load shedding, the exchange rate, people not having money.
As an independent, here on the floor, I see how consumers are battling, but I’m sure the chains are affected the same way.
Our customers are the middle class, and they’re having to make a lot of grudge purchases, like boreholes and solar panels, and that doesn’t leave much for footwear.
Maybe we could do better, but we’re doing the best we know how, for example by doing a lot of our own importing – but the government is no friend to small businesses, with all their duties and rules.

Wage negotiations

No deal for Footwear Sector

Gerald Naidoo, General Secretary/Principal Officer, National Bargaining Council of the Leather Industry of SA
Durban, KZN, SA - Feedback on Footwear wage negotiations:
After two rounds of wage negotiations, the parties were unable to reach a settlement. SAFLIA was given until 27 May 2023 to obtain a revised mandate from its members and provide an improved offer of settlement.

They Said It

"Yes indeed, at 73, I am still 'on the road' and still have 3 agencies which I look after. The one agency I miss the most is Rockshoes, Pinetown, which as you know, closed down some years back. I was their Eastern Cape agent for 15 glorious years & must say that Mike Pengelly was undoubtedly the best principal I ever had. We are still in touch with each other. As you well know, the costs 'on the road' have tipped the scales in the wrong direction & margins are extremely thin, but as they say in the classics....if you retire, you expire. As long as my health is good, I will always keep myself busy." - Brian Da Costa, commission agent, Port Elizabeth, E. Cape, SA.
