Midland Tannery ‘considering options’

Wolwehoek, Free State, SA - Midland Tannery, which processes hides from the vertically integrated Midland Group’s feedlots from raw to wet blue, wet white and finished leather, “is considering its options”, GM Rudie Nieuwoudt confirmed on Friday, in response to speculation about its future.
      He said a decision would be made by end October.

 

Kangol: SA footwear distribution rights unknown as Jumbo agreement ends

Pietermaritzburg, KZN, SA - Jumbo Footwear group subsidiary Foothills Trading & Investment 2 (Pty) Ltd’s distribution agreement with Kangol ends on 31 December, Dionne Prinsloo of Allied Agencies confirmed on Friday.
      ”We are currently in the process of winding down our involvement,” he wrote. “We have no idea who may continue with Kangol branded footwear in 2024.”
      Sole Agents Distribution (Pty) Ltd distributes Kangol headwear in SA.
      According to a report in Women’s Wear Daily on 02 February this year, Bollman Hat Company, the oldest hat maker in the United States, acquired a 51% stake and full intellectual property rights to Kangol from the UK-based Frasers Group.
      “Bollman has held the license to develop and produce Kangol headwear since 2001. The deal will now allow Bollman to oversee Kangol’s complete portfolio, which includes apparel and accessories such as bags and wallets,” the report said.
      Bollman did not respond to an enquiry from S&V regarding distribution rights in SA for Kangol.

Truworths’, Woolworths’ annual reports

ABSA Agri Trends: Hides & skins prices

Johannesburg, Gauteng, SA (28 September 2023) - The average hide price increased by 0.03% to R3.34/kg from R3.39/kg in the previous week. The current price is 9.2% higher than the average price a month ago and 28.0% lower than the average price a year ago. The range of prices reported was as follows: Minimum price: R2.75 Maximum price: R4.50. Please note: Our methodology weighs the prices we collect according to the number of hides they sell in a month. This is done to make it more representative of the prevailing market price. NB* Hide prices are determined by the average of the RMAA (Red Meat Abattoir Association) and independent companies. - Marlene Louw, senior agricultural economist, and Nkhensani Mashimbyi, agricultural economist, and Zama Sangweni, agricultural economist, Absa group.
