AGOA Forum

Johannesburg, Gauteng, SA - South Africa exports $32 million of CTFL goods per year to USA under AGOA, according to Dr Jaywant Irkhede, director, leather & footwear at the DTIC, after last week’s 20th AGOA Forum.
That trade was thought to be at risk over the SA Government’s stance on the Ukraine war.
SAFLEC and at least 4 leather and footwear manufacturers exhibited at the adjacent Made in Africa expo – the automotive leather tannery Pangea, and the footwear manufacturers Angel Footwear, Dick Whittington Shoes, and Palm Footwear.
Dick Whittington sales & marketing director Tavonga Gonyora, who is also chairman of SAFLEC, and who was the only person available to speak to today, said the fair had mostly been about making contacts with other exhibitors.
President Cyril Ramaphosa was among the visitors to the SAFLEC and footwear stands.

Prisaan in voluntary liquidation

Pinetown, KZN, SA - Prisaan Footwear went into voluntary liquidation on 04 October, Clenton Govender has confirmed.
The landlord has confirmed that all machinery has been moved out of the building.
However, it is unclear whether a liquidator has been appointed.
Prisaan made women’s footwear, mostly in synthetics, for chain customers. It was making around 7500 pairs/day.

They Said It

"We have exciting plans in the pipeline.  Even though I’m approaching that time when I should be dreaming of a white beach and bendy palm trees." - A southern African manufacturer, who needs anonymity. Not everyone is battling.

ABSA Agri Trends: Hides & skins prices

Johannesburg, Gauteng, SA (02 November 2023) - The average hide price is R3.26/kg, remaining the same as the previous week. The current price is 3.8% lower than the average price a month ago and 26.9% lower than the average price a year ago. The range of prices reported was as follows: Minimum price: R2.75 Maximum price: R3.50. Please note: Our methodology weighs the prices we collect according to the number of hides they sell in a month. This is done to make it more representative of the prevailing market price. NB* Hide prices are determined by the average of the RMAA (Red Meat Abattoir Association) and independent companies. - Marlene Louw, senior agricultural economist, and Nkhensani Mashimbyi, agricultural economist, and Zama Sangweni, agricultural economist, Absa group.
