A time for fortitude

Everyone I’ve phoned for comment this week so far was either not back at work or had just started, so my queries about back-to-school and New Year sales went unanswered.
My impression late last year was that most businesses in our industries were pessimistic about this year. There were exceptions, but they were rare.
And it didn’t take long for most South Africans’ number 1 gripe, load shedding, to kick in. After a couple of load shedding-free weeks – in Durban, anyway – the lights went out last night with almost no warning.
I’m expecting a difficult year, and I know this business will have to make changes – though quite what I’m not yet sure.
What I do know is that change is possible, and that if I’m to save the jobs I support, my business, my future, I must try hard not just for myself, but for the greater good.
Best wishes to our readers. May we all be able to help make a difference.

They Said It

"There's a breathless hush in the Close to-night—
Ten to make and the match to win—
A bumping pitch and a blinding light,
An hour to play and the last man in.
And it's not for the sake of a ribboned coat,
Or the selfish hope of a season's fame,
But his captain's hand on his shoulder smote
Play up! play up! and play the game!"
- Henry Newbolt (1862-1938), the first verse of Vitaï Lampada (the torch of life).

ABSA Agri Trends: Hides & skins prices

Johannesburg, Gauteng, SA (14 December 2023) - The average hide price decreased by 0.07% to R3.288/kg from R3.286/kg in the previous week. The current price is 0.23% higher than the average price a month ago and 21.3% lower than the average price a year ago. The range of prices reported was as follows: Minimum price: R3.25 Maximum price: R3.50.
