Trading: Elections, weather…
David Fox, Footwear Buyer, Choice Clothing
Cape Town, W. Cape, SA – Trade has been slow in general everywhere. The weather hasnt helped as winter kicked in late, but we are hoping for a good month now that the weather is getting colder. The elctions have not helped as people generally dont have a lot of money to spend, and supply has been difficult as the price of freights have gone up drastically over the last few months.
Cheryl Kretschmer, Group Buyer, Spargs Group
East London, E. Cape, SA – The first half of 2024 has certainly been challenging to say the least with the election month of May being a particular low point. Winter sales were very slow until the first cold snap in June and certainly the first week of July has seen an upswing in sales.
Fortunately, stock supply hasn’t been an issue, but demand just isn’t there. We feel the challenges of Shein and Temu even in the Eastern Cape which hadn’t previously been affected by the increase in online purchasing.
In case you missed it!

They Said It
"EU eyeing import duties that would stunt Shein, Temu, Shein has a new headache that could impact growth plans. The impossibly cheap exports hawked by China-based e-commerce titans are reportedly under the microscope of European regulators." - Headline and first paragraph of an article last week in Sourcing Journal. Will SA follow suit?

ABSA Agri Trends: Hides & skins prices
Johannesburg, Gauteng, SA (04 July 2024) - The average hide price decreased by 0.17% to 3.209/kg from R3.214/kg a week ago. The current price is 1.09% lower than the average price a month ago and 5.1% lower than the average price a year ago. The range of prices reported was as follows: Minimum price: R3.00 Maximum price: R3.25. Price movements will be highly influenced by developments in the status of our animal diseases. Please note: Our methodology weighs the prices we collect according to the number of hides they sell in a month. This is done to make it more representative of the prevailing market price. NB* Hide prices are determined by the average of the RMAA (Red Meat Abattoir Association) and independent companies. - Marlene Louw, senior agricultural economist, and Nkhensani Mashimbyi, agricultural economist, and Zama Sangweni, agricultural economist, Absa group.
