Imports: Tough market worsened by poor logistics

Paul Hancock, Intobrands
Cape Town, W. Cape, SA – FitFlop sneakers and our UGG slippers and boots have been performing well – we are sold out in most of the popular styles.
Hunter is however performing poorly although picked up slightly with the rain.
      Everything else is slow.

Ellie Gerpinis, Earth Gear
Johannesburg, Gauteng, SA – Secondary sales have been slow, but we are at least on projected target at the moment, which we are very grateful for, but from here on, is the challenge. Last year this time we were also on target, and then things tapered off. I believe there are many reasons that affected this, but this is also when our manufacturing and shipping challenges began and created a new normal for us, that continues to today!
On shipping challenges, do you have a month? I have plenty to say, but I will just say this… we used to have our shipment from port of origin to our possession within maximum 17 days, and now our new normal on shipping is 65 to 70 days!!!!! A whole season too late… and all the challenges that come with…. Enough said!!!!!
The whole chain is affected by the global and local (Durban Port as an example) situations, and we have been lucky enough that our stockists are obliging and understanding and have accommodated us on delays. These are tough times indeed.

Nas Kokoroyanis, Florsheim SA
Johannesburg, Gauteng, SA – Retail is not good, and has got to affect us as wholesalers. The Florsheim brand is holding its own in the marketplace, and we are grateful for that. We have created core items that have stood us in good stead. Our fashion lines are performing well, also. I believe pricing is key, as the consumer is looking for value in the products he wants to purchase.
Logistics have become expensive and difficult, particularly from a timing aspect. Shipments from the East are now taking 7-8 weeks, whereas 4 months ago, they took 3-4 weeks. India has become just as difficult.

ABSA Agri Trends: Hides & skins prices

Johannesburg, Gauteng, SA (18 July 2024) - The average hide price decreased by 13.8% to 2.764/kg from R3.208/kg a week ago. The current price is 14.4% lower than the average price a month ago and 18.2% lower than the average price a year ago. The range of prices reported was as follows: Minimum price: R2.53 Maximum price: R3.00. Price movements will be highly influenced by developments in the status of our animal diseases. Please note: Our methodology weighs the prices we collect according to the number of hides they sell in a month. This is done to make it more representative of the prevailing market price. NB* Hide prices are determined by the average of the RMAA (Red Meat Abattoir Association) and independent companies. - Marlene Louw, senior agricultural economist, and Nkhensani Mashimbyi, agricultural economist, and Zama Sangweni, agricultural economist, Absa group.
