Cork upper brand ceases operation

Cape Town, W. Cape, SA - Cork upper footwear brand Reefer “ceased operations” early this year, founder Sebastian Matheson said last week.
“We lacked the finances to really promote it,” he said. “We received quite a few accolades over the 5 years, we sold quite a few thousand pairs, and the interest was definitely there, but we just couldn’t kick on from there.”
Most of Reefer’s shoes were made by Hopewell Footwear in Durban, but Reefer also sourced from micro enterprises with low MOQs, he said.
He has joined a business which is developing sustainable packaging for the food and beverage industry, particularly fast foods and takeaways, to replace plastics with recyclable products like Kraft paper and sugar cane.

Corvari: Toughest year ever

Jeff Bodill, proprietor, Corvari Footwear
Pinetown, KZN, SA - We are very quiet and have been for a long while. It would seem that the imports are still strong and buying power has decreased locally as we see with many sectors of business in SA. As we fall into the (higher) bracket of leather shoes, the majority of possible customers has shrunk. This has been our toughest year ever and we just have to keep on going.

Appointment

Cape Town, W. Cape, SA - Vuyolwethu Yekiso has been appointed leisure footwear senior buyer at Cape Union Mart.

They Said It

"The whole clothing industry has gone to hell. The Chinese have infiltrated everywhere with their rubbish." - Minichain retailer in Gauteng.
