Despite challenges, still a place for formal
Tavonga Gonyora, sales & marketing director, Dick Whittington Shoes Pietermaritzburg, KZN, SA - Despite the challenging trading conditions, we have continued to enjoy the support of our trusted retailers, which has seen our order position up on last year across our major brands.
Market insights show that many South Africans continue to struggle financially due to the cost-of-living crisis, where high levels of inflation are impacting the cost of food, fuel and even mortgage and rent payments. Therefore, price-sensitive consumers are reducing their discretionary spending. For most low-income consumers in South Africa, food is the main priority, leaving categories such as apparel and footwear as an afterthought.
We are not in competition with the sneaker business. Despite the shift from formal footwear to casual there is still room for a well-made pair of smart formal dress shoes. Our Bishop, Johnston & Murphy and Saxone brands continue to hold their own.
It is our hope that the recent fuel price decreases coupled with the 2-pot retirement system will drive up some much-needed money supply which further stimulate retail sales. The strengthening of the rand is a bit of a double-edged sword which also serves to cheapen the imports coming into the country.
As a business we maintain our ethos of continually delivering footwear of exceptional quality and value.
Celebrations as Nike changes CEO
Even very big companies can make very big, very expensive mistakes.
Under the headline ‘Nike Employees and Industry Leaders Rejoice at New CEO Announcement’, Footwear News last week reported:
“The shoe industry got a welcome surprise Thursday afternoon when the Swoosh announced a long-awaiting change to the top of its leadership team: chief executive officer John Donahoe will step down from the company, effective Oct. 13 and be replaced by former Nike executive Elliott Hill, who served in several leadership roles before retiring in 2020.
Nike’s move was applauded by Wall Street, with shares of the company shooting up 10.2 percent to $89.25 in afterhours trading on Thursday. The stock remained up at market open on Friday.
The market wasn’t the only one rejoicing. In the wake of the announcements, several industry leaders — as well as current and former Nike employees — took to LinkedIn to share their excitement about the new appointment and shared their hopes that Nike might finally be on the right track after several quarters of falling sales.
Bloomberg.com was crueller.
Under the headline ‘The Man Who Made Nike Uncool’, it wrote: “Instead of transforming the sneaker giant into a high-tech powerhouse, John Donahoe pissed off partners and disappointed fans.”
It also said Donahoe earned over $100 million in 5 years and cost Nike $40 billion in market value.
Will all this mean SA retailers who were cast aside by Nike can expect calls? Probably not anytime soon.
In case you missed it!
