Trump threatens additional tariffs on nations ‘aligning’ with ‘anti-American’ BRICS

President Trump threatened to impose an additional 10% tariff on countries “aligning” themselves with the BRICS bloc of developing nations.
“Any Country aligning themselves with the Anti-American policies of BRICS, will be charged an ADDITIONAL 10% Tariff. There will be no exceptions to this policy. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post Sunday evening.
The threat comes after members of the BRICS group issued a declaration on Sunday condemning the U.S. increase in tariffs, as well as the strikes on Iran — all without mentioning Trump by name.
The group’s statement raised “serious concerns” tariffs, saying they are “inconsistent with WTO (World Trade Organization) rules” and threaten to “reduce global trade, disrupt global supply chains, and introduce uncertainty.”
The group also criticized NATO’s decision to increase defence spending to 5% of GDP by 2035 — a decision prompted by Trump’s insistence that Europe shoulder more of the alliance’s defence burden.
BRICS was founded by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, but the group last year expanded to include Indonesia, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates.
Brazil, which is hosting this year’s 2-day summit, has sought to avoid more controversial issues to avoid becoming the target of higher taxes. Trump has threatened to impose 100% tariffs against the bloc if they take any moves to undermine the dollar.
Trump’s 90-day pause on his sweeping reciprocal tariffs is set to expire on 09 July. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has said the higher tariff rates will be imposed on 01 August if countries do not strike trade deals with the U.S. sooner.

Port Edward, KZN, SA – We had a good December, and Easter was pretty good. This mid-year holiday is never great for us, but I’m hoping it will be fair over the next 2 weeks. Offseason of course is very quiet for a beach and surf shop on the South Coast.
Stock hasn’t been an issue. I buy the brands in February for summer and September for winter. Flip flops and smaller items I top up as needed, and with some suppliers you can order whenever you need.
Up on last year, but taking it month-by-month

Pietermaritzburg, KZN, SA – It’s tough, and there’s lots of unemployment. June was on the quiet side, and the weather hasn’t made a lot of difference.
However, May was quite good, and the year overall so far has been 8-10% up on the same period last year. As far as the rest of the year goes, we just have to take it month-by-month.
Imported stock has been affected by the problems in the docks. Local goods are less important than they were because there’s less variety and fewer manufacturers.

ABSA Agri Trends: Hides & skins prices
Johannesburg, Gauteng, SA (03 July 2025) – The current average hide price decreased by 0.15% to R2.4727/kg from R2.4764/kg a week ago. The current price is 0.06% lower than the average price a month ago and was 22.9% lower than the average price a year ago. The range of prices reported was as follows: Minimum price: R2.00 Maximum price: R2.94. Please note: Our methodology weighs the prices we collect according to the number of hides they sell in a month. This is done to make it more representative of the prevailing market price.
