‘What the cowboy boot boom says about America’

Extract from an article in Bloomberg.com on Saturday.

The style statement is also a story about the US search for identity. They’re symbolic of everything the cowboy represents in US culture: freedom, independence, self-reliance, self-assurance.
The idea that there’s a right way to develop the American economy is not so different from the idea that there’s a right way to be American: independent, self-reliant, self-assured. No totem embodies this ideal more than the Marlboro Man-style cowboy — and no item embodies that stereotype better than the cowboy boot. Cowboys tend to become trendy in the US in times of political and social upheaval, which helps explain why today’s deeply divided America is seeing an absolute boom in boot sales. The only trouble with the cowboy as a representation of libertarian ideals, Madison Darbyshire writes, is that it’s almost entirely a myth.

Increased minimum duties application correction

Umhlanga, KZN, SA - In the article headlined ‘Increased minimum duties application – SAFLIA keeps nagging’ in last week’s newsletter, it was stated that: ‘After 4 years of research and negotiation with ITAC, SAFLIA first made the application to cover 27 tariff lines on 29 March this year, and on 02 April asked that the 8 tariff lines covering safety footwear be subject to the R50/pair rate.’
In fact, the original application was made in March 2022, and a refreshed application was made in February this year (2025).

Nike fiscal 2026 first quarter results

Beaverton, Oregon, US (09/30/2025) - Nike reported fiscal 2026 financial results for its first quarter ended 31 August 2025.

  • First quarter revenues were $11.7 billion, up 1% on a reported basis compared to the prior year and down 1% on a currency-neutral basis
  • NIKE Direct revenues were $4.5 billion, down 4% on a reported basis and down 5% on a currency-neutral basis
  • Wholesale revenues were $6.8 billion, up 7% on a reported basis and up 5% on a currency-neutral basis
  • Gross margin decreased 320 basis points to 42.2%
  • Diluted earnings per share was $0.49

This quarter NIKE drove progress through our Win Now actions in our priority areas of North America, Wholesale, and Running,” said Elliott Hill, President & CEO, NIKE, Inc. “While we’re getting wins under our belt, we still have work ahead to get all sports, geographies, and channels on a similar path as we manage a dynamic operating environment. I’m confident that we have the right focus in Win Now and that our new alignment in the Sport Offense will be the key to maximizing NIKE, Inc.’s complete portfolio over the long-term.”
“I’m encouraged by the momentum we generated in the quarter, but progress will not be linear as dimensions of our business recover on different timelines,” said Matthew Friend, Executive Vice President & Chief Financial Officer, NIKE, Inc. “While we navigate several external headwinds, our teams are focused on executing against what we can control.
