Retail Trading Shoppers are coming but spending lessBoksburg, Gauteng, SA – Trading is “okay, but it’s not like previous years”, Suleiman Teladia, a member at Brands Megastore, said on Friday. “We’re getting the volume of feet, but people are spending less,” he said. “It’s possible Black Friday had an effect, because it was month end. Also, I think many people haven’t received bonuses this year. “However, being positive, I’m hoping the next few days will be good.”
‘Consumers don’t have money’Dundee, KZN, SA – Trading so far is “not like normal”, Zaid Ayob, a member at Manhattan’s, said on Friday. “This area has been affected by the economy,” he said. “Guys don’t have finances like they had before. Quite a few shops that have closed. Hopefully it should pick from Monday to Wednesday.”
‘2025 has been slow and tough’Port Shepstone, KZN, SA – December so far “has been like the rest of the year – slow and tough”, Naseem Essack, director of Brandz, said on Friday. “I hope something changes in the next 5 or 6 days.”
‘The rich are still rich, but the middle class is battling’Johannesburg, Gauteng, SA – Trading isn’t good because traditional customers don’t have money, M.H. Abdulla, member of Casual Affair in the Oriental Plaza, said on Saturday. “Expensive branded shops are doing well,” he said, “but our customers, the middle class, are battling. Also, trade in the plaza isn’t balanced – too many shoe and clothing shops.”

ABSA Agri Trends: Hides & skins pricesJohannesburg, Gauteng, SA (19 December 2025) – The current average hide price increased by 0.20% to R2.327/kg from R2.322/kg a week ago. The current price is 0.14% lower than the average price a month ago and was 17.1% lower than the average price a year ago. The range of prices reported was as follows: Minimum price: R2.25 Maximum price: R2.87. Please note: Our methodology weighs the prices we collect according to the number of hides they sell in a month. This is done to make it more representative of the prevailing market price. NB* Hide prices are determined by the average of the RMAA (Red Meat Abattoir Association) and independent companies - Marlene Louw, senior agricultural economist, Nkhensani Mashimbyi, agricultural economist, and Zama Sangweni, agricultural economist, ABSA group.
