Hide export restrictions back on the table

The steep increase in hide prices - and the succession of leather price increases that have followed - has put the concept of some form of restriction on the export of hides back on the table.
In a meeting called by the DTIC last Thursday, attended by the International Trade Administration Commission (ITAC), the SA Feedlot Association (SAFA), the Skin, Hide & Leather Council (SHALC), Exotic Leather SA (ELSA), the SA Ostrich Business Chamber (SAOBC), the Southern African Footwear & Leather Industries Association (SAFLIA) and the Association of SA Manufacturers of Luggage, Handbags & General Goods (ASAM), delegates were asked for their input on stopping the export of raw hides, but not wet blue hides.
Restrictions were first mooted in 2012, but with the collapse of hide prices 3 years ago "everyone forgot about it", a source said.

Prime Sole: Zimbabwe footwear industry 'reasonably stable'

Harare, Zimbabwe – Prime Sole MD Michelle Wilson said the lifting last week of the 08.00-15.30 restriction on working hours, in place since late June, coupled with schools going back, had been "a vast improvement" for the footwear industry.
"When the schools close, the footwear industry more-or-less grinds to a halt," she said.
With many formal footwear manufacturers closed - most recently, Superior Footwear and its tanning arm, Imponente Leather - or apparently just ticking over, she said her customer base now included many informal shoemakers. "Many of them have grown substantially. Where they started out buying perhaps 10 pairs at a time, some of them are now buying 1 000, even 2 000 pairs at a time."
Many of them were former workers in formal factories whose technical knowledge was limited to the operations they had performed. "To help them, we ran workshops to teach them how to make better footwear," she said. "We're all about improving the situation as much as we can."
She said the government was trying to save manufacturing businesses, and its currency auction system - where importers bid to buy US dollars - "has worked pretty well for me".
While the Zimbabwean dollar had weakened, and there was still a sizeable disparity between the official auction and black market rates (85 versus 145), "it's held up for most of the year", she said.

Pick n Pay fashion on Zando

Cape Town, W. Cape, SA (08 September 2021) – According to Business Report, Pick n Pay Clothing is now being sold on Zando following a partnership with the online store. The company anticipates that this will help expand their customer base, extending customer outreach and availing greater opportunities for buyers to acquire their range. This move further complements Pick n Pay Clothing's online presence and consolidates its brand's position in the clothing market.

Court dismisses Steinhoff's bid to delay start of liquidation case

Cape Town, W. Cape, SA – According to a report in Fin24 on Saturday, Steinhoff's bid to postpone the liquidation application it is facing has been dismissed by the Western Cape High Court.
According to the report, the winding up application was brought by the former owners of shoe retailer Tekkie Town who say they were "duped" by Steinhoff's ex-CEO Markus Jooste into swapping their shares in the footwear chain for stock in Steinhoff.
Last week the retailer asked Judge Hayley Slingers to postpone the case to let it appeal an earlier ruling that found the court has jurisdiction to hear the case. The retailer had argued that a South African court could not wind up an "external company' like Steinhoff, which since 2015 has been registered in the Netherlands.
But on Friday evening, Slingers dismissed the retailer's application for a delay. No reasons were provided. Slingers has said she would provide these at a later date.
Steinhoff was also ordered to pay the costs of Tekkie Town's counsel.
The order means that, as it stands, the liquidation case will recommence on Tuesday for two days of hearings. Monday 20 September could be used for a reserve date if needed.
Steinhoff on Friday also announced that it had received the support of the final claimant class in its R25 billion settlement plan.
This means that courts in the Netherlands and South Africa can as of next week start hearings to sanction the plan.

They Said It

"He was an above-average singer and dancer and performed in several local musical productions ... Many years later he was introduced to Karaoke by his Japanese clients and impressed them no end with his renditions of Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra songs." - An extract from the fascinating upcoming article in S&V African Leather on Saag Jonker, arguably the ostrich industry's most outstanding (and colourful) character. If it's not a plot spoiler, let me tell you there are 2 very different versions of his singing, and particularly his karaoke skills.

ABSA Agri Trends: Hides & skins prices

Johannesburg, Gauteng, SA (09 September 2021) - The current average hide price decreased by 0.35% to R9.78/kg from R9.81/kg a week ago. The current price is 2.00% lower than the average price a month ago and is 1359% higher than the average price a year ago. The range of prices reported was as follows: Minimum price: R7.49, Maximum price: R11.00. Please note, we have changed our methodology and price levels are not directly comparable to previous prices that we reported on. Our methodology weighs the prices we collect according to the number of hides they sell in a month. This is done to make it more representative of the prevailing market price. NB* Hide prices are determined by the average of the RMAA (Red Meat Abattoir Association) and independent companies. - Marlene Louw, senior agricultural economist, and Nkhensani Mashimbyi, agricultural economist, Absa group.
