Queue Shoes: Sales improving

Cape Town, W. Cape, SA – "Sales in September have shown an improving trend," Queue Shoes director Steve Miller said. "This is after a challenging couple of months, and this has continued over the long weekend with target for the four days achieved. Retail sales went slightly over target, whilst good growth was seen online.
"We are looking forward to a better 4th quarter,  and hopeful that restrictions will be further relaxed. Also the return of tourists and 'swallows', who are an important part of our client base, will be very welcome."

Sneakers: Waiting for air travel to resume

Pinetown, KZN, SA – More than almost any other retailer, Sneakers International's business model has been hit by pandemic regulations. Of its 14 stores, 13 are in airports, and the other is at Pretoria sports stadium Loftus Versfeld. "Our trade is very different from malls," said Jill Moss, who had to take over running the business when husband Dave died in February last year, shortly before the first lockdown.
"There are hardly any international flights, so the stores in the duty free areas are doing nothing. Business in the stores serving domestic travel is down 60% to 70%. The Loftus store is open 3 days a week, and its turnover is down by the same sort of percentage.
:"Online has helped to some extent, but replica rugby jerseys and sports regalia are luxury items, and with very few matches being played, people weren't tempted to buy. We won't recover until sport and tourism do."
She said the business wasn't in a position to reopen mall stores.
She said the decision by the U.S. to allow vaccinated passengers to fly there from November offered some promise, "but we need that for the UK, too".
She said suppliers - most of the sports and surf brands - had been "very helpful".
"We slowly disposed of leftover stock, and we've only been buying what we need.
"Carrying on with the business would not have been possible without the help of Sneakers senior managers who have taken on added responsibilities to ensure that we keep trading."

Jackson's: On hold while considering future

Pietermaritzburg, KZN, SA – Ismail Lall, managing member of Jackson's Clothing & Footwear, says he's "thinking very deeply" about what direction to take next year.
Jackson's was previously a wholesaler and a 7-store retailer, but sold or closed its stores before the lockdown last year.
"On the wholesaling side, there was so much uncertainty that we didn't place any import orders this year. On the footwear side, I'm doing a little business with the Chatsworth guys and servicing a few clients, but nothing major. Basically, I've put everything on hold until I've decided what to do next year."

Villani: In business rescue, but going forward

Johanesburg, Gauteng, SA – Ismail Lall, managing member of Jackson's Clothing & Footwear, says he's "thinking very deeply" about what direction to take next year.
Villani Shoes has gone into business rescue, Pino Di Lembo, brother of the late owner, Marco, has confirmed. He said Marco's son, Michele, is going forward with it.

Memories reinvented

Knysna, W. Cape, SA – Corrie Hofmeyr and her son Morné Pienaar closed leather goods and footwear shop Memories, but have opened a new business, on a smaller scale, trading as Deco Memories.
"The landlord started ‘The Foundation’, which is a larger open plan area on different levels, in an old building on the Main Street next to the mall where our shop was," Pienaar said.
"We've been allocated an area of about 3x3 meters and we are about 15 different merchants selling clothing, jewellery, a nursery, spices, leather, a coffee shop and our stall, focusing on shoes. All the products have to be manufactured in South Africa.

"We pay a very small monthly rent and they take a commission on the sales, but they supply the staff and there’s a single pay point for all the stalls. Nothing stops us from assisting on busy days, but we don’t have to be there 7 days a week from 9am to 6pm.
"It's only the second month, but I do feel very positive about the concept and we know where to source locally manufactured shoes."

Cape Town, W. Cape, SA – Former Jordan Shoes sales and marketing director Stewart Francks died on Friday, aged 74.

They Said It

"So Sorry to hear of Robin Scott's passing. He was a superb person, and not merely a retail person, but one who had the courage to go into footwear manufacturing too. Above all he had always had an extremely positive attitude. Never did I see him 'down', or without a smile. Wherever he is, God bless him." - Lionel Astill.

ABSA Agri Trends: Hides & skins prices

Johannesburg, Gauteng, SA (23 September 2021) - The current average hide price decreased by 0.80% to R8.89/kg from R8.96/kg a week ago. The current price is 9.32% lower than the average price a month ago and is 473% higher than the average price a year ago. The range of prices reported was as follows: Minimum price: R7.95, Maximum price: R10.00. Please note, we have changed our methodology and price levels are not directly comparable to previous prices that we reported on. Our methodology weighs the prices we collect according to the number of hides they sell in a month. This is done to make it more representative of the prevailing market price. NB* Hide prices are determined by the average of the RMAA (Red Meat Abattoir Association) and independent companies. - Marlene Louw, senior agricultural economist, and Nkhensani Mashimbyi, agricultural economist, Absa group.
