Apeco sells Jo'burg branch to African Gameskins

Pinetown, KZN, SA – As "part of its consolidation", Apeco has sold its Johannesburg branch to Cape Town, W. Cape-based African Gameskins Group of Companies, who were looking to expand their wholesale footprint into Gauteng, Apeco MD Mark Gibbing said on Friday.
The sale is effective from today.
Apeco now has only its Pinetown branch, and will service the rest of the country from there, Gibbings said.
African Gameskins has also acquired Apeco's Top Nylon brand, which covers a range of products aimed at the shoe repair industry.
Further information will follow from both parties.

Tourism

The UK last week took South Africa off its 'Red List', meaning South Africa's biggest source of tourists can return. This will mean a great deal, especially to footwear and leather goods manufacturers and retailers servicing the tourist industry in the Western Cape. Sadly, the news was too late for some.

Sneakers International: Expecting a tourist surge

By Jill Moss
Durban, KZN, SA – South Africa coming of the British Government’s Red List means that we will be able to open our store in OR Tambo international departures for the first time since March 2020.
It will mean that South Africans will be able to travel to the UK for the end of year rugby games and that should translate into sales of rugby replica.
We are expecting a large number of tourists arriving from the UK as well as South Africans travelling to the UK to visit friends and family.

Redemption Leather: 'Happy days are here again'

By Arnold Slabber
Wellington, W. Cape, SA – It will mean a lot. The Brits that have got property here can come back to SA. They need sandals for our hot weather. I have regulars that support me, and they bring friends and family. The farms around me, with restaurants and wine tasting, attract them also, and we need them. Earning their living in pounds, they find SA cheap. I'm going to sing "Happy days are here again".

Freestyle: It adds to eco-tourism re-boot

By Jason Wilkins
Cape Town, W. Cape, SA – We're very pleased. It basically adds a lot of value to the current re-boot for our customers in eco-tourism.
The benefits to the broader economy will also be very welcome.

Hadley Original Products: First, our customers have to benefit

By Hadley Craig
Cape Town, W. Cape, SA – We're hoping that it will impact our business but we are a long way down the line! First the lodges and hotels need to get busy as most of our work comes through them.
We have already seen a bit of movement on local restaurants (menu covers) and hoping the retail market will pick up soon for other goods.
Trying to stay positive in these difficult times.

Kurgan Kenani: Help for our embattled hospitality customers

By Daniel Kurgan
Cape Town, W. Cape, SA – It will add to the positive sentiment that is slowly starting to emerge as we exit the third wave. I see it having a better then last year impact on hospitality and tourism related businesses, so hopefully this will help orders return from our embattled hospitality clients.

FSP: Retailers have already been in touch

By Fiona Borthwick
Cape Town, W. Cape, SA – As a supplier of indigenous game skin handbags and homeware aimed at the tourist market, I'm excited and relieved about the delisting of South Africa from the UK red list.
I have already been contacted by our clients with stores at key tourist destinations like The Waterfront, Kruger and even Namibia about stock availability, production and delivery lead times.
The lifting will definitely have a positive impact on South Africa’s economic recovery and hopefully the increased footfall of passengers moving through the airports will provide much needed revitalisation.
The loss of jobs has been catastrophic in the tourism and hospitality sectors and we all hope to be in a position to continue to grow our business’s again.

Rof Boots: Not enough yet to save brands who focus on this market

By Grandt Mason, consultant to Rof Boots
Cape Town, W. Cape, SA – While the move off the Red list will see an increase in International tourists and subsequent sales, I don’t think it will be enough to save those brands who focus on the artisan / tourist market.
The bigger threat is the continuous lockdowns which are obliterating small business. Until the Government wakes up and treats this virus for what it actually is, we will continue to see small businesses suffer and close their doors.

Trade

Last week's comments 'spot on'

By Greg Bing, A.P. Jones
Fish Hoek, W. Cape, SA – The articles and comments from Kingons and Burtons are spot on. Percentages, ups and downs, deliveries, fair play, year-on-year comparisons for independents etc., are consistent with where we at A.P. Jones are in the market place.

Stock Exchange News Services (SENS)

Pepkor: Results will be 'at least 20%' up

Cape Town, W. Cape, SA (05 October 2021) – Pepkor has announced "that a reasonable degree of certainty exists" that its headline earnings per share and earnings per share will increase by at least 20% when its financial results for the year to 30 September 2021 are released on or about 19 November 2021.
Improved trading conditions because of the relaxation of Covid regulations is 1 of 4 factors listed. To read the full report, go to http://www.sharedata.co.za/v2/Scripts/News.aspx?c=PPH&sensid=398270

They Said It

"Many people say we are all in the same boat.  No, we are all in the same storm, but some of us are in rubber ducks and others are in huge yachts…  In a nutshell, some businesses face great difficulty and others flourish during this storm." - Quintin Marais, Rolfes Leather, Boksburg, Gauteng, SA. How right he is: In the latest issue of S&V Footwear & Leather Goods, out tomorrow, we write about how local flip flop manufacturers and retailers are enjoying boom times, thanks to Covid. Most others, however, aren't so fortunate.

"We had a good laugh here at the office about this: 'After farming and serving on the Board of the KKK for several years...' Really?? The KKK have a board here?" - Sureshan Reddy, Stanger Textile Industries, KwaDukuza (Stanger), KZN, SA. He was referring to an article in the September issue of S&V African Leather which mentioned the Klein Karoo Koöperasie. And I must say, I found the Koöperasie pretty fearsome in those days...

ABSA Agri Trends: Hides & skins prices

Johannesburg, Gauteng, SA (07 October 2021) - The current average hide price decreased by 2% to R6.27/kg from R6.40/kg a week ago. The current price is 36% lower than the average price a month ago and is 243% higher than the average price a year ago. The range of prices reported was as follows: Minimum price: R6.10 Maximum price: R6.50. Please note, we have changed our methodology and price levels are not directly comparable to previous prices that we reported on. Our methodology weighs the prices we collect according to the number of hides they sell in a month. This is done to make it more representative of the prevailing market price. NB* Hide prices are determined by the average of the RMAA (Red Meat Abattoir Association) and independent companies. - Marlene Louw, senior agricultural economist, and Nkhensani Mashimbyi, agricultural economist, Absa group.
