APLF 2023 will go ahead - in Dubai

Hong Kong – After repeated postponements followed by cancellations of the 2020 and 2021 events, APLF Leather, Materials+ and Fashion Access will be held in 2022 at their normal time of year - 30 March to 01 April - but will be held in Dubai, organiser APLF Ltd announced in a Zoom press conference last Wednesday.
The Hong Kong Government announced in August that current regulations, which stipulate a quarantine period for visitors, have been extended to the end of March 2022. APLF director and senior vice president of Informa Markets, David Bondi, said that after considering a number of other possible venues in the East, it decided on Dubai because that country re-opened to international travellers in July this year, and because it is accessible and well served by airlines.
"98.1% of its people are vaccinated, and several events have already been successfully held there," he said. In a survey of leather industry associations and exhibitors, "Dubai got the most votes".
Acknowledging that the composition of visitors would be different from the Hong Kong event, APLF event director Grace Lee said while there would be fewer visitors from China, they expected more from Eastern Europe and the Indian sub-continent.
She also said the Pan African Leather Fair, which was supposed to have its inaugural event in Cairo, Egypt, in 2020, and which was put forward to June this year and then cancelled, was still not confirmed for 2023.

The APLF fairs attract more SA leather industry exhibitors than any other fair, and they are also among the most popular fairs for SA visitors from across the leather-footwear-leather goods spectrum. By Friday, just 4 of the South African businesses which regularly exhibit at APLF exhibitors had responded to our query whether they would exhibit in Dubai:
"Le Croc is planning to exhibit at the show in Dubai, if the situation remains unchanged and visitors are allowed to travel internationally without quarantine," wrote MD Stefan van As.
"We're not sure yet," wrote Paola Jonck, PA to Ostrich Products SA (OPSA) chairman Saag Jonker. "We paid in advance for the previous time which was cancelled due to Covid, so there is a chance we might just go."
"I think it’ll be a good fair; and a key move away from Hong Kong until China reopens," wrote CPC director Greg Feinberg. "But our business has evolved substantially over the past few years and at this stage we don’t see a need to exhibit."
The African Gameskin Group of Companies would not exhibit, director Denzil Spolander wrote.

Online retailer HomeChoice shuts fashion division

Cape Town, W. Cape, SA – Online retailer HomeChoice Holdings has closed its fashion division, effective last week. At the time of writing, it had not responded to a query about the reasons behind the closure, or how many staff were affected.
Incorporated in Mauritius and listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, HomeChoice describes itself as an "omni-channel retailer delivering quality homeware merchandise directly to homes", with a turnover of R1.2 billion.

Vietnam overtakes China in textile upper footwear

Wellington, W. Cape, SA – According to World Footwear, in 2020 Vietnam was responsible for more than one quarter of the world’s exports, and climbed to the leadership of the table of the top 10 exporters of textile footwear.
"China is close behind but, for the first time since the World Footwear Yearbook was launched ten years ago, is not leading the exports of one of the main categories of footwear exports.
"The two countries have a very different market positioning with Vietnam on average charging 19 US dollars per pair exported while China charges only 5 US dollars." - https://www.worldfootwear.com/

Zimbabwe moves to maintain financial stability

In Zimbabwe, where importers bid for US dollars, the black market is threatening stability.
TechZim reported on a meeting on 11 October between Government, the Reserve Bank, the Bankers Association of Zimbabwe, retailers' associations and the manufacturing sector to "deliberate on the matter of the exchange rate and the parallel market rate".
It said "all the parties underscored the need to maintain the macroeconomic stability momentum experienced in the last 12 months". - Full Article

Steinhoff updates

On Friday, News24 reported that the Constitutional Court had refused Steinhoff's application for leave to appeal a ruling by a lower court that found it has jurisdiction to hear a liquidation case against the retailer.
Steinhoff had approached the Constitutional Court on an urgent basis in late September in a bid to stop the Western Cape High Court from hearing an application, brought by the former owners of shoe retailer Tekkie Town, to have it liquidated.
"While the apex court will not hear the appeal at this stage, the Western Cape High Court is expected to hear the application for leave to appeal next week," the report said.
On Thursday, Steinhoff said a hearing on its Steinhoff Global Settlement, originally planned for 30 September, but delayed because of applications to have it liquidated by the former Tekkie Town owners, "has been set down for a hearing on 24 to 28 January 2022".

They Said It

"Just hope that SASRIA will continue to pay out to their customers so that retailers can get going again. It ‘s been 3 months  after the looting/riots and a lot of the rebuilding has not  yet taken place. Carte Blanche covered it very well  Sunday 10th October 2021. It is so sad to see how the independent retailers are trying to get everything together again – the state of their stores/buildings is dreadful – wonder if  Durban  will ever be the same again." - Sue Isaacson, agent, Durban, KZN, SA.

ABSA Agri Trends: Hides & skins prices

Johannesburg, Gauteng, SA (14 October 2021) - The current average hide price decreased by 9.5% to R5.68/kg from R6.27/kg a week ago. The current price is 42% lower than the average price a month ago and is 176% higher than the average price a year ago. The range of prices reported was as follows: Minimum price: R5.50 Maximum price: R6.50. Please note, we have changed our methodology and price levels are not directly comparable to previous prices that we reported on. Our methodology weighs the prices we collect according to the number of hides they sell in a month. This is done to make it more representative of the prevailing market price. NB* Hide prices are determined by the average of the RMAA (Red Meat Abattoir Association) and independent companies. - Marlene Louw, senior agricultural economist, and Nkhensani Mashimbyi, agricultural economist, Absa group.
