Back to school

Expecting a return to normality

Last Wednesday I emailed 5 school shoe suppliers, a school shoe wholesaler, and a chain and an independent retailer which specialise in school shoes to ask what they expect of back-to-school business this year.
Sensibly, 7 of the 8 had switched off their emails for the holidays, and only 1 replied. Thank you, Stephen Burrow of Softer, who wrote:

  • We are expecting a far more normal Back to School than last year.
  • We do not anticipate a late start and things should be as normal as they can be.
  • It seems the current strain of Covid is far less severe and has had virtually no negative impact on society when compared to previous strains.
  • We even anticipate that school sports will return to normal, and include spectators.

In terms of Supply Chain, we have not felt any negative impact at this stage, we were fortunate to have secured all our raw materials early on, and we are also fortunate that most of our inputs are locally sourced and manufactured. It also would appear that as things “normalise” globally, so will supply chains as well.

Let's hope for the best year of the last three and that things show signs of reverting to normal.

Steinhoff inches closer to settlement

Stellenbosch, W. Cape, SA (28 December 2021) – On 15 December 2021 Steinhoff announced that Trevo Capital Ltd. and certain other SIHPL non-qualifying claimants had confirmed their conditional support for the S155 Proposal subject to the satisfaction of certain suspensive conditions on or before 11 January 2022, unless waived or extended by the parties (“SIHPL NQC Settlement”). One of the conditions to support was that Steinhoff obtained the requisite level of support from its financial creditors for the SIHPL NQC Settlement.
On 15 December 2021 Steinhoff separately announced that parties including the former owners of the Tekkie Town business had agreed, amongst other things, to withdraw their opposition to the S155 Proposal and to withdraw their liquidation application against SIHNV (“TT Settlement”), subject respectively to Steinhoff obtaining requisite financial creditor support for the TT Settlement and the implementation of the Global Litigation Settlement. Both the SIHPL NQC Settlement and the TT Settlement are subject to the Global Litigation Settlement being implemented by 30 June 2022.
As an update to the implementation of the conditions to those conditional settlements, Steinhoff reported that the threshold required to obtain the necessary financial creditor support for both the SIHPL NQC Settlement and the TT Settlement has been obtained. The formal financial creditor consent vote remains open until 30 December 2021.
Claimants are able to review additional information in relation to the Global Litigation Settlement on the following website: www.SteinhoffSettlement.com

ABSA Agri Trends: Hides & skins prices

Johannesburg, Gauteng, SA (15 December 2021) - The current average hide price increased by 3.4% to R5.50/kg from R5.30kg a week ago. The current price is 18% higher than the average price a month ago and is 40% higher than the average price a year ago. The range of prices reported was as follows: Minimum price: R4.94 Maximum price: R5.80. Please note, we have changed our methodology and price levels are not directly comparable to previous prices that we reported on. Our methodology weighs the prices we collect according to the number of hides they sell in a month. This is done to make it more representative of the prevailing market price. NB* Hide prices are determined by the average of the RMAA (Red Meat Abattoir Association) and independent companies. - Marlene Louw, senior agricultural economist, and Nkhensani Mashimbyi, agricultural economist, Absa group.
